Great gourmet burgers at Red Robin
Don Fowler

We were big fans of Macaroni Grill near Warwick Mall. When they went out of business and another “burger joint” opened at the location, we were unhappy.

Our grandson told us that Red Robin had “awesome burgers,” so we had to check it out.

He was correct. The huge fire-grilled burgers are awesome, the tastiest we have had in a long time.

The brightly lit, flashy facility is a bit much, although very popular with families with young children, as was evidenced by our 5 p.m. weekday visit. When we left an hour later, there was a waiting list, which we understand is pretty much a given. But it is worth it for the quick, friendly service and burgers. There are 11 specialties on the menu, and they can be altered to your tastes.

Joyce had the Burnin’ Love Burger, the only one with a flame beside it ($9.59). She ordered it rare, and that’s the way she got it, complete with jalapeno coins, salsa with a tang, spicy pepperjack cheese over a cayenne-seasoned burger, and topped with lettuce and tomato to “cool it off.” Even the roll – a jalapeno-cornmeal Kaiser roll with chipotle mayo – was hot. She loved it.

I’m a bit more conservative with hot food and was fascinated by their Prime Chophouse Burger. It came medium rare, as I ordered it, layered with horseradish-sautéed mushrooms, gourmet steak sauce, provolone cheese and crispy onion straws, served on an onion roll with country Dijon sauce ($9.69) It is one of the best specialty burgers I have ever eaten.

The burger is wrapped on the bottom to protect your hands from any dripping sauces and requires opening wide to get around everything that is packed into the fresh roll. While an endless supply of fries comes with it, we chose a substitute of coleslaw and enjoyed a unique, sweet taste treat. Our friendly waitress brought us two servings and asked if we wanted more.

If you want to watch your calories, you can substitute the fries with the slaw, a salad or steamed veggies, plus there are a number of sides available at a small additional charge.

A special kids menu (10 and younger) includes kid-friendly chicken fingers, burgers, corn dogs and mac ‘n’ cheese, plus a variety of healthy sides, all for under $5.

There’s much more on the menu, including shareable appetizers, including nachos, riblets, wings and fried jalapeno coins. Next time we’re going for the Towering Onion Rings, 13 rings stacked high for $7.99, plus a variety of Jump Starters for $3.29.

Chicken and fish sandwiches are available, along with a variety of entrees, combos, salads, wraps, soups and desserts. We may try them sometime, but we still have another nine gourmet burgers to try.

Open daily for lunch, dinner and late night dining, Red Robin is a welcome addition to Warwick Mall.
