Members of the Bishop Hendricken indoor track team competed at the Dartmouth Relays this past weekend and had a great deal of success.

Despite coming in second place as a team to La Salle, Hendricken’s 4x200 relay team was able to set a new meet record.

The team of Power Kanga, Lee Moses, Kwity Paye and Nick Stravato completed the race in 1 minute, 32.58 seconds – good for not only first place at this year’s event, but it also shattered the previous Dartmouth Relay record.

Moses also impressed in the long jump event as well, registering a first-place leap of 23 feet, 0.5 inches.

Hawks’ senior Tom Grizzetti also notched a top-five finish at the event.

Grizzetti crossed the finish line in the two mile run in nine minutes, 39.98 seconds – good for fifth.

Titans split a pair of games

Last Wednesday night, the Toll Gate boys’ basketball team won its second league game of the season, convincingly getting past Davies, 56-16.

Guards Joel Johnson and Austin Giard paced the Titans’ balanced scoring attack in the win. Johnson had a team-high 13 points, while Giard had 10.

Just a night later, however, the Titans dropped a game, 42-34, to unbeaten Scituate. The Spartans are the only undefeated team remaining in D-III boys’ basketball, at 6-0, after beating Johnston on Friday night in the battle of the unbeatens.

Johnson once again led the Titans on the score sheet, scoring 11 points, while senior Adam Brice chipped in with eight.

Toll Gate has a busy week coming up, as it’ll play three games, all against subdivision opponents.

The Titans played Pilgrim on Monday night, but results were unavailable at press time. They will host Chariho on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., before playing at intra-city rival Warwick Vets at 7 p.m. on Friday night.

Titans move above .500 with win

The Toll Gate girls’ basketball team beat Rocky Hill, 38-17, on Friday night to move to 3-2 in Division-III-South.

Hannah McNulty scored a game-high 19 points for the Titans, while point guard Marisa Giard was second on the team with eight points.

Toll Gate played at Hope on Monday afternoon, but results were unavailable at press time.

The Titans will also play at Warwick Vets for a D-III-South game tonight at 7 p.m.

Hawks edge Sentinels

Hendricken and La Salle have bridged a gap between the rest of the teams in the Championship Division in boys’ hockey.

With the Hawks 4-1 win over Smithfield on Friday night, they now have a 7-1 record in league play. Hendricken’s 14 points is tops in the division, but the Rams are still unbeaten, with a 6-0-1 record, 13 points and a game in-hand over Hendricken.

Forwards Brandon Mitchell and Eric Edwards paced Hendricken’s attack in the 4-1 win over Smithfield, notching a goal and an assist apiece.

After Hendricken scored the first goal of the game in the first period, Smithfield answered, but the Hawks were able to respond with three unansw)ered goals to reject the Sentinels’ upset bid.

The Hawks will now travel to Springfield, Mass. to play Springfield Cathedral for a non-league game at noon on Saturday, before hosting Notre Dame of West Haven, Conn. on Monday at 4 p.m.

The game against Notre Dame will count towards Hendricken’s league record.

Hendricken will then have a primetime match-up against the Rams next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Thayer Arena, as the Hawks will look to avenge their 4-1 loss to La Salle earlier in the season.

Titans win first dual meet in over a year

After going 0-8 in Division II in its dual meet season a year ago, the Toll Gate girls’ swimming team has moved down to Division III and has already encountered more success than last season.

Two rejuvenated programs, Toll Gate and Warwick Vets, faced off at McDermott Pool on Thursday, with both teams looking for their first win of the season.

Led by Athena Sampalis, the Titans were able to defeat the ‘Canes, 53-27.

Sampalis won the 50 free, 200 free and competed in the 200 free relay and medley relay – both won by Toll Gate.

With the win, the Titans improve to 1-2, while the ‘Canes fall to 0-2, still left searching for their first victory.

Toll Gate will go head-to-head with Pilgrim on Wednesday at 5:30 at McDermott Pool, while Vets will take on undefeated Classical at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Pleasant View Elementary School in Providence.
