Hawks capture Challenge Cup

The Bishop Hendricken golf team captured the Challenge Cup last week at Alpine Country Club in Cranston.

The Hawks edged defending state champion Moses Brown and Thayer Academy of Brantree, Mass. by two strokes to claim their first Challenge Cup title under head coach Rick Angeli and Hendricken’s 11th in 33 years. The Hawks had a two-day total of 650, while Moses Brown and Thayer Academy closed the tournament with 652.

Hendricken was able to build a two-stroke lead after day one, as sophomore Joey Tucker led the charge by shooting a 76. Senior Sal Savastano and freshman Colin Sutyla also scored well on day one, as each shot an 81, while Zachary White shot an 83.

On day two, Hendricken was able to hold on to its two-shot lead, with sophomore Sean Irons shooting a team-best 78.

Tucker led the Hawks with a two-day total of 156.

Angeli was pleased with the way that his team battled through the elements, as the Hawks built a lead on Monday when the weather was less than cooperative.

Hendricken seems to be on the right track after a disappointing finish a year ago.

The Challenge Cup is one of the major tournaments on the Hawks’ schedule, so this should build some confidence as the state championship approaches.
