Hawks coast to division title

Hendricken out-dueled Classical to win the Central Division Championship on Tuesday afternoon on its home track. The Hawks racked up 171 points, while Classical checked in at 110. Pilgrim was tops among Warwick public schools in fifth, and Toll Gate was sixth. Warwick Vets did not score.

The Hawks won eight events, with sophomore standout Lee Moses leading the charge. Moses won the 200 meters in 22.2 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches.

Also grabbing first place for the Hawks were Power Kanga in the 100, Colin Tierney in the 1,500, Tyler Henseler in the 3,000, and Adam McAteer in the 110 hurdles. The Hawks also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Tacking onto their first-place finishes, Kanga added a sixth in the long jump, Tierney added a third in the 3,000, Henseler added a second in the 1,500 and McAteer chipped in a fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Henseler and Tierney were part of a dominant distance effort from the Hawks. Tom Grizzetti, Greg Beaudette and Connor Doyle joined Henseler and Tierney in the top six of the 3,000. Doyle also added a third in the 800, while Alex Doherty finished fourth in the 800.

Also on the track, Jack Cure finished fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100, Ian MacLeod finished third in the 400, Andrew Geremia grabbed sixth in the 200, Cameron Ricci finished sixth in the 400, and Gage Powell finished sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Brendan McNamara added a fourth in the pole vault and a sixth in the 300 hurdles, while Ben Murphy finished second in the high jump and third in the triple jump. Reggie Deresier finished fourth in the triple jump.

In the throws, Nick DeCiantis finished second in the discus, Matt Casbarro placed fourth in the hammer, Alex Cerbo took fifth in the shot, Matt Bacon finished fifth in the javelin and Brandon Amo finished sixth in the discus.

Pilgrim athletes placed in the top six in seven events as the Pats tallied 38 points. Steve Croft was the team’s only winner with a first place in the 400 in a time of 52.10, and he also chipped in a second in the 200. Derek Daluz was busy, grabbing third in the 100, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the javelin. Peter Golish grabbed fourth in the discus and Dylan Gardner finished sixth in the hammer.

Toll Gate also had one first-place finisher as Tyler Inkley won the javelin. Inkley’s best throw was 159-06, good enough to edge Central’s Clarence Gallop, who threw 159-00. Max Procopio also placed for the Titans, taking sixth in the pole vault.

The top finisher for Warwick Vets was Frank Merlino, who took 11th in the shot put.
