The Bishop Hendricken wrestling team won its third consecutive state title last season, and it looks primed to capture a fourth.
The Hawks crushed Mt. Hope at home on Thursday night, winning all but one weight class, 66-6. The only loss on the night came in the 113 match, which the Hawks had to forfeit as they had no one in the slot.
“They wrestled well,” Hendricken coach Kevin Hennessey said. “We still have a ton to work on. [Mt. Hope is] a young team, they took third in the state last year, but they have a lot of new guys in their lineup. Overall the guys did okay.”
Nate Williams got the Hawks off to a quick start on the night, pinning Richard DiFrenna in just 29 seconds in the 106. After the forfeit evened the score at 6, the Hawks would win every match.
Nick Berling, Dylan DiSano and Jonathan Celico reeled off three straight pins to put the Hawks up 24-6. Then, Devin Rivet got five more points for the home side when he made quick work of Scott Primiano in the 138.
“Momentum’s very important,” Hennessey said. “Nobody wants to be the kid that doesn’t follow suit. So winning is contagious, so is losing.”
Jamie Swanson pinned his opponent in the 145 before Anthony Lanni won a close 6-2 decision in the 152 to put Hendricken up 38-6.
Marco Arcand took a 7-4 victory in the 160 and Steve Johnson kept pouring it on with a pin 45 seconds into the second round of the 170 to make it 47-6.
James Sauro got four points in the 182 while Ben Monti edged out his opponent in the 195.
“I was proud of our 195-pounder, who was wrestling in a close match and opened up a little bit, got a nice throw and I like to see that,” Hennessey said.
Nick Martino and Frank Cole would close out the night on a high note for the Hawks, notching first-round pins in the 220 and 285 matches, respectively.
The Hawks will take to the road Wednesday for their next test, a tri-tournament at Westerly featuring the Bulldogs and South Kingstown.
“We’re just going to pick up the intensity in the room and stay focused and move forward,” Hennessey said.
