Hawks cruise to Schomp Invitational title

The Bishop Hendricken track team defended its Rick Schomp Invitational title on Saturday at Chariho High School, totaling 75.5 points to coast by second-place West Warwick (57.3 points).

The Hawks’ day was highlighted by two first-place finishes – one in the 110 high hurdles and the other in the 4x100. Junior Ethan Famiano accounted for the title in the 110 high hurdles, eking out a victory over North Kingstown’s Ben Shapira.

The quartet of Brandon Arpin, Jared Grossi, Kwity Paye and Ethan Pezzullo combined to win the 4x100 in a time of 43.9 seconds.

In addition to the pair of winning performances, Hendricken also placed 15 additional times throughout the day.

In the field events, senior Eunki Seonwoo claimed sixth in the hammer throw, Paye took third in the shot put and Russ White and Dylan Gardner tied for fifth in the high jump. White then followed with a fourth-place performance in the long jump, Joe Santos took sixth in the triple jump and a mark of 11 feet was good enough to earn Connor Sheridan second in the pole vault.

And Hendricken’s dominance continued in the running events, as well.

Grossi earned fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100 and 200, before Nick Williams took third in the 400 with a time of 50.4 seconds.

The Hawks then placed three in the 110 high hurdles, with Santos and Sheridan following the first-place finish from Famiano by placing fourth and sixth.

Bob Merlino was the lone Hawk to place in the 300 intermediate hurdles, earning third with a time of 41.3 seconds.

In addition to winning the 4x100, Hendricken also finished second in the 4x400 and third in the 4x800.

The Hawks have continued to build momentum as the state meet approaches, as they’ve compiled a perfect 11-0 dual meet record.

They’ll be back in action today at Conley Stadium in Providence for the Central Division Championships at 4 p.m.

Toll Gate’s Jacobsen, Pilgrim’s Stanley shine

Toll Gate senior Courtney Jacobsen solidified her No. 1 ranking in the U.S. in the 4-kilogram hammer throw on Saturday at the Schomp Invitational, taking the crown with a toss of 177 feet, seven inches.

Not to be outdone, Pilgrim senior Madison Stanley notched the only other first-place finish on the girls’ side, winning the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 2.25 inches.

Although no Warwick team finished in the top nine for overall team score, several individuals impressed.

In the field events, Toll Gate’s Ani Armenakyan finished second in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet, .5 inches and Ashley Chin earned sixth in the high jump, while Warwick Vets’ Arianna Pafume claimed third in the javelin throw, measuring in at 105 feet, 11 inches.

Stanley also had success running, as she placed third in the 200, while teammate and distance runner Danika Wayss took third in the 1500.

The Titans’ Casey Gannon registered her own third-place finish, clocking in with a time of 46.8 seconds in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Pilgrim rounded out its day with a sixth-place finish in the 4x100 relay, while Toll Gate earned the same honor in the 4x400.

The ’Canes, Pats and Titans will be back on the road Wednesday when they compete for the Central Division Championship at Conley Stadium at 4 p.m.
