Hawks crush Falcons to remain unbeaten

The Hendricken Hawks wrestling squad beat the Cranston West Falcons 61-3 on Thursday evening.

Cranston West head coach Tim Almonte knew Hendricken was tough, but felt his team should have been better.

“Way too many of our kids got pinned,” Almonte said. “We should have wrestled a lot harder. We should have had a couple more wins.”

In the first match, the 113, Hendricken’s Nate Williams pinned Edward Scanlon 42 seconds into the first period to give the Hawks an early 6-0 lead.

Hendricken junior Nicholas Berling beat Victor DeCotis in the 120. Berling started with a takedown. Then, Berling got DeCotis in a headlock before pinning him 1:10 seconds into the first period.

In the 126, the Hawks’ Dylan DiSano beat West’s William Quattrocchi. DiSano scored four takedowns, but Quattrocchi would escape three times before DiSano finally pinned him before the end of the first period.

Hendricken’s John Celico had a reversal on West’s Tyler Gomez, and went on to beat him in the 132. The two grappled while standing and no one scored a takedown in the first period. In the second period, Celico started in the referee top position and continued to stay on top, but he couldn’t hold Gomez down long enough to earn any points and after two periods the match was still locked at 0. Finally, Celico took down Gomez and went on to win 5-0.

In the 138, Hendricken’s Devin Rivet beat Noah James. Rivet started with an early takedown and added two more when he held James down for two seconds. However, James reversed the move and scored two points, pulling within 4-2. Then, Rivet scored two more before the end of the first period to go up 6-2. In the second period, Rivet took down his opponent and held him down five seconds and cruised to a 17-3 decision.

In the 145, Hendricken senior James Swanson made quick work of West freshman Cooper Krusz, disposing of him by pinning him 41 seconds into the match.

West senior Rip Cooper took on junior Marc-Oliver Arcand in the 152. There was no score after one period, but Arcand scored a reversal followed by a near fall in the third to win 5-0.

Next, in the only win for West, Nick Almonte took out Steven Johnson in the 160. Steve started out strong with a takedown on Almonte with 18.5 left in the first period. Nonetheless, trailing 2-0 in the second period, West’s Almonte reversed out of the defensive starting position and picked up and slammed Johnson to the mat, giving him a 3-2 edge with 24.1 seconds left in the second period.

The slam earned Almonte a big roar from the West crowd.

In the third period, Almonte was in the referee top position before Johnson reversed out of it to tie the match at 3 with 1:31 left in the final frame. However, Almonte got the best of Johnson in the final period when he executed a takedown and scored off a penalty to win 6-3.

“I’m very excited,” said West head coach Tim Almonte of his son’s win. “He’s been working hard.”

In the 170, West senior Zach French faced off against Hendricken sophomore Matt DiMauro. DiMauro led 1-0 after the first period before he increased his lead with a takedown. French would score two points on a takedown of his own in the second period, but a near fall and another takedown by DiMauro extended his lead to 7-2. In the third period, DiMauro escaped and took down French to go up 10-2 before finally pinning him with 1:11 left in the third period.

The next three fights all ended in the first period.

In the 182, Hendricken senior James Sauro took on West sophomore Dimitri Bradley. First, Sauro went up 2-0 after a takedown. However, Sauro committed a penalty and gave a point to Bradley before Bradley escaped a move to tie the match at 2. Nonetheless, Sauro eventually took down Bradley before pinning him 1:04 into the first round.

In the 195, it was another quick match. Hendricken’s Colton Boesch took on Adam Chilvers. Boesch earned a take down and pinned Chilvers with 53 seconds left in the first period.

Hendricken’s Nick Martino pinned West sophomore Sam Folco 30 seconds into the 220.

Finally in the 285 bout, Hendricken’s Frank Cole dominated Tom Napolitano. Cole took down Napolitano in the first round before Napolitano escaped. In the second period, Cole earned two points on a reversal and two more on a near fall to go up 6-1. Cole eventually earned the decision with that score.

The only forfeit on the night came when West couldn’t fill the 106. The Hawks’ Nathan Williams earned the win by default.

While happy with his team’s victory, Hendricken head coach Kevin Hennessey still feels his squad needs to work out some kinks.

“We did well, but we need to work on things that we need to get better at,” Hennessey said.

Hendricken travels to Cumberland on Wednesday night. It will be a battle of the two top dogs in the division.
