Hawks fall to undefeated Rams

It’s been a tough 2015 season thus far for the Bishop Hendricken lacrosse team. It dropped its first two games of the season, then split its next four games, posting a 2-4 record heading into Wednesday night’s showdown with defending three-time Division I champion La Salle Academy at Lou Cimini Athletic Stadium in Providence.

The Rams came into the contest sporting a 6-0 record, including a 15-5 victory in their first meeting with Hendricken in the first game of the year.

La Salle’s offense leads Division I in goals scored with 102, while its defense has allowed the fewest goals in the league at 29, so the Hawks knew they would have their hands full.

The Rams would pull away late in the second quarter en route to an 18-6 win to remain unbeaten in their seven games, while the Hawks fell to 2-5 with four games remaining in the season.

“We play to win the championship, but we are not at that point right now,” said Hendricken head coach Kevin Murray. “We played hard tonight, but La Salle is a good team. We had some personnel changes and we are still figuring out a few positions. We were in the game in the beginning, but we pushed away a few bad shots and we got out of the game real quick. La Salle is a team you have to be patient with – we pushed it a little too much and gave them turnovers, which was the difference in the game. We need a little work all around at the moment.”

The Hawks scored first on a goal by Kiel Fuller just 1:35 into the first quarter, but the Rams would answer with four straight goals by Matthew Manown, Samuel Coleman, Evan McGreen and Michael Dignan. Hendricken’s Ryan Williams then scored to make it a 4-2 game, ending La Salle’s run.

Joe Palmer’s goal late in the first quarter cut La Salle’s lead to 5-3 with twelve minutes in the books.

La Salle would pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks, 5-1, with Wyatt Alberigo scoring the lone Hendricken goal.

After Alberigo scored for the visitors to cut the lead to two,

La Salle broke the game open late in the second quarter. Leading 6-4, the Rams went on to score four goals in two minutes and fifteen seconds, giving them a 10-4 halftime lead.

The Rams would own the fourth quarter, outscoring the Hawks, 6-1, with Logan Liljeberg leading the way with a game-high four goals.

With three key players out with injuries, La Salle head coach Steven O’Donnell praised his reserves for stepping up.

“It’s a good team win,” O’Donnell said. “We were a little banged up and had a freshman, Nick DiMuccio, starting in goal tonight and he stepped it up and did a really good job for us in just his first start with 13 saves. We did very well with the face-offs with our senior captain Nick Battista winning at least ninety percent of them. Some of our marquee players did not have a good game, but other kids stepped up and that is encouraging. We have some pretty good talent and our goal is to get better with every game.”

Murray remained positive despite the loss saying, “We have to remain positive. I don’t care what our record is, it’s the playoffs where it counts and we have had success in the postseason in the past. We played hard and the kids are sticking with it and that’s all you can ask from them.”

The Hawks would fall to 2-6 on the year with a 13-4 loss at East Greenwich on Friday night. Tyler Williams, Bryce Dolan, Joe Sousa and Palmer scored the goals for the Hawks.

The Hawks will host the winless South Kingstown Rebels, a team they beat 11-6 earlier in the year, tonight at 6 p.m.
