Hawks hold equipment drive

The Bishop Hendricken baseball team is undefeated this season and will begin its state title series tonight at McCoy, but that hasn’t taken time away from its efforts in the community.

Throughout the season, the Hawks have taken part in a program run through the Major League Baseball Players’ Association called Action Teams. The program is run in conjunction with Pitch In For Baseball, which is based in Harleysville, Penn.

The Action Team National Youth Volunteer Program was created in 2003 by the Major League Baseball Players Trust and Volunteers of America to recruit and train high school students to become volunteers in their communities.

So Hendricken decided to jump on board this season and take the initiative to gather used baseball equipment for kids who are less fortunate in the United States and around the world.

The efforts were spearheaded by Hendricken pitching coach Chris Sheehan and seniors Mike Webb and Kevin Sutyla.

Sheehan is happy with the end result of the equipment drive and with how his players stepped up.

“I thought that it would be a good project for the team to do and we got a lot of used equipment – gloves, helmets, bats, catcher’s equipment and bags,” Sheehan said.

Webb and Sutyla did an outstanding job in leading the efforts from a players’ standpoint, as well.

“They did a great job with it,” Sheehan said of Hendricken’s two seniors.

After a successful year one, the Hawks are looking forward to partnering with the MLB Action Team for several future projects.
