Hawks pull away from Townies, open league slate with victory

Posted

League play began around the state this past weekend, and the Bishop Hendricken football team picked up right where it left off from last season.

The Hawks opened up with a 34-14 win over East Providence, making them 1-0 in Division I. Senior quarterback John Toppa was the offensive star of the game, running for touchdowns of 10 and 67 yards and throwing two more. Toppa hit Lee Moses for a 14-yard score and found Power Kanga for a 49-yard touchdown.

Terrence Gibbs added a 6-yard touchdown run, as Hendricken scored 34 points for the second consecutive week. It led only 20-14 at halftime against the Townies, but scored one touchdown in each of the final two quarters to pull away.

East Providence’s points came courtesy of an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jaevin Millhouse and an 8-yard run from Trystan Casey, both in the second quarter.

Hendricken will play a key D-I game next weekend, as it hosts Portsmouth at 7 p.m. The Patriots, a playoff team last season before losing to the Hawks in the semifinals, opened up their league slate with a 29-25 win over Cranston East on Friday night. (Warwick Beacon photos by Gage Potter)
