Hawks’ tennis falls in D-I semis to Rebels

The Bishop Hendricken tennis team made a good run this past week, defeating East Greenwich, 4-1, on Wednesday, before falling to eventual state champion South Kingstown in the Division I semifinals on Thursday.

The Hawks entered the playoffs as the No. 5 seed, setting up a quarterfinal match-up with the fourth-seeded Avengers.

But even though Hendricken was the lower seed, it didn’t show.

Chad Doorley earned a win in singles over Mike Sack, 6-1, 6-1, before Jordan Carvalhal breezed by Max Fertik, 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles, Hendricken’s Adeeb Komari and Christian Kirby defeated EG’s Shevey Kabassi and Danny O’Brien, 7-5, 6-2.

The Hawks’ Geoffrey Boyer and Frank Gramlich also stepped up and earned a doubles win, coasting by Ken Shanos and Luke Eller, 6-2, 6-1.

That proved to be all that Hendricken would need to set up a date with top-seeded SK in the semis.

But the Rebels were simply too much for Hendricken, winning their first four matches to roll into the finals.

SK went on to dominate second-seeded Barrington in the finals as well, 4-0, to give the Rebels their 15th state title in the last 17 years.
