Hawks use strong fourth quarter to upend Patriots

The Bishop Hendricken football team reeled off three touchdowns in the final quarter against Portsmouth on Friday to secure a 35-7 road win over the Patriots.

Junior quarterback Chris Hindle connected twice on the day with tight end Trevor Lawton, for scores of 25 and 31 yards. Hindle also had a 33-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver Dante Baldelli.

Running back Jake Derderian piled up two scores of his own for the Hawks (2-0), from three and 18 yards out.

The Hawks are now one of three undefeated teams remaining in Division I, along with La Salle (2-0) and South Kingstown (1-0).

Hendricken will have a good chance of keeping its spotless record in tact next week at Barrington. The 0-2 Eagles are reeling from back-to-back 47-0 drubbings at the hands of La Salle and South Kingstown. Before that, they were crushed 32-12 in a non-league game against Division II Tolman.

The Hawks open up a three-game homestand after their tilt with Barrington, hosting Cranston East, Cumberland and Cranston West.

‘Canes fall at Central for second straight road loss

Warwick Vets kept first-place Central honest after the first quarter with the game tied at 6, but the wheels came off as the Knights put up 42 unanswered to come away with a 48-6 win.

Senior quarterback Nick Beaufort got Vets on the board early with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Eric Watts.

It was all Central after the first, though. Running back Tyrone Silva gashed Vets’ defense for four touchdowns on the ground, while Tony Reeves added a 60-yard punt return touchdown. Quarterback Chris Leo had two passing scores as well.

The ‘Canes (0-2) will return home this Friday for their first league game in Warwick this season. Vets will host Coventry (0-2), which has only scored nine more points than the ‘Canes in league play. The Oakers are coming off a 36-0 shutout loss at St. Raphael’s and are in the midst of a four-game road trip.
