Hawks win freshman wrestling championship

The Bishop Hendricken wrestling team showed off some of its program depth on Saturday by taking first place in the freshman state championships, held at Coventry High School.

The Hawks scored 141 points, easily out-distancing second-place Cumberland’s 112. Warwick Vets came in eighth place with 54 points to lead all Warwick public schools, while Pilgrim came in 12th with 39 points and Toll Gate came in 22nd with 19.

The Hawks were paced by a first-place and three second-place finishes. Nick Martino was Hendricken’s lone champion, taking first at 195, while Anthony Lanni took second at 120 pounds, Marc-Oliver Arcand took second at 132 and Colton Boesch took second at 170.

Nick Berling finished in third for Hendricken at 106 and Anthony Parente did the same at 126. Sean Fleury and Frank Cole added third-place showings at 182 and 285, respectively.

Vets’ Logan Amirault was the top Warwick public school finisher, continuing his outstanding freshman campaign with a championship at 126. Vets’ Robert Thomas took second at 145.

For Pilgrim, Garrison Potter was third at 152 and Steven Kavanaugh was third at 170. Michael Sanville was fourth at 100.

Toll Gate’s lone top-four finisher was Kyle Brown in fourth at 132.

The junior varsity state championships were held the same day, with Toll Gate finishing in 13th with 38.5 points, Hendricken taking 16th with 33 points and Pilgrim finishing in 26th with seven points. Vets did not score.

Hendricken’s Benjamin Monti had the highest finish of the day with a third-place finish at 182. Toll Gate’s Hunter Stephenson took fourth at 106 and the Titans’ Eric Mechanic was fourth at 285.
