Heidel, Arines on target for RIC lacrosse

Posted

The women’s lacrosse team at Rhode Island College is usually stocked with local talent, and this year’s squad is no exception, with two players from Warwick seeing significant playing time for the Anchorwomen so far in the 2014 campaign.

Pilgrim alumna Betsy Heidel is earning her stripes in her freshman season, having played in all five contests for RIC to date and being ruthlessly efficient in front of the goal.

The former Patriot has notched three goals on just seven shots, all of which were successfully placed on goal.

Additionally, Heidel has also contributed a pair of assists, with both helpers coming in a see-saw encounter with Johnson & Wales on March 20 that saw the Anchorwomen defeat the Wildcats 15-14.

Whereas Heidel is just starting her intercollegiate career, former Warwick Vets standout Cassy Arines is about to close the book on hers.

The senior defender has also seen the field in every game thus far for RIC in 2014 and while she hasn’t gotten her name on the score sheet, she helps the Anchorwomen out in other ways.

Arines is one of five players on the squad that has reached double digits in ground balls, having accumulated exactly 10, five off the team lead.

The Anchorwomen saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday, coming out on the short end of a 13-2 rout on the road against Eastern Connecticut, in which the Warriors scored the final nine goals of the game.

The next opportunity for Heidel, Arines and their teammates to return to the “W” side of the column will come this Saturday as RIC takes on Western Connecticut.

The Colonials have had the upper hand against the Anchorwomen in recent times, having won the last six meetings between the two schools.
