So, what do you give someone on their 106th birthday? One of the gifts Arthur J. “Jerry” Latham Jr. received was a baseball. He wasn’t quite up to playing catch Wednesday, but his daughter, Nancy Cornish, assured he’ll be up and puttering around the house shortly. Born May 18, 1910 in a home near the intersection of Park and Warwick Avenues in Cranston, Jerry served aboard the USS New York in the Pacific during World War II. On returning to Rhode Island he worked for the Providence Gas Co. until forced to retire at 65 in 1975. He served as pastor of the Community of Christ Church for 10 years and as a voluntary driver for many years for senior citizens – often he was their elder. Jerry and his wife Doris have been married 75 years. They are the parents of two children and have four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jerry is pictured here with his daughter Nancy and wife Doris at his Warwick Neck Home. As his daughter says, “He still is completely sharp, although he tires quickly. He still has a great smile and a twinkle in his eyes, too.”
