Fiorito buzzer-beater lifts Hawks over Kilties in 2OT

There wasn't time to think, just react.

Bobby Fiorito reacted in the best way possible.

There aren't a lot of plays to run with 4.1 seconds left so when Fiorito took a pass from Isaiah Mylers there was only one thing to do. He raced up court, squared up between the right wing and top of the key and hit a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, giving Bishop Hendricken a 67-66, double-overtime win over Mount Pleasant in the Division I semifinals Friday night.

“I just knew we had to score,” Fiorito said. “I didn't know we were down by two or three or whatever it was. I thought I hit the shot and [thought] it was tied up.”

The final shot gave Hendricken its second lead of the overtime periods following a 56-54 advantage that lasted for all of 17 seconds in the first overtime. In regulation, the Hawks led for a grand total of three minutes and 18 seconds with 2:59 worth coming in the first 10 minutes of the game.

While the Kilties and their fans went bananas as Mount Pleasant opened up a lead that got as big as nine in the first half and 11 in the second half, the Hawks went about their business. Hendricken never faltered. There was no frustration, no anger, no sniping back and forth or pointing fingers.

“That's what coach tells us not to do,” Fiorito said. “We listen to him as we practice and it comes out in the games.”

“You're never out of the game, no matter what the score is,” Hendricken coach Jamal Gomes said. “You're going go fight and play as hard as you can and these guys have really bought into that.”

The difference in composure was clear in the game's final series.

After a layup by Fiorito made it 65-64 with 25 seconds left, Mount Pleasant's Charles Martinez nearly turned the ball over against the Hendricken press. Instead of immediately fouling, the Hawks tried to trap in the half-court before conceding and sending Martinez to the line with 4.1 left.

He made the first, missed the second, and Mylers grabbed the ball and whipped it to Fiorito seemingly before he landed. Gomes had a timeout in his pocket, but after calling one with five seconds left in regulation as Justin Mazzulla banged home a shot that would have won the game, the coach decided to let it play out.

“I learned from my first mistake,” Gomes said. “... I said to myself, if that happens again I'm just going to let it play because it's very difficult, in a situation like that, for the defense to be able to match up and stop the ball.”

There was a calmness about the play because it wasn't a play. Fiorito's shot was exactly what anyone who's picked up a ball has ever done alone on a court – countdown from five, race up court, pull up and shoot.

The sophomore just happened to do this countdown in the biggest moment of his career in front of a packed house at CCRI Warwick.

“I had to get a shot off,” said Fiorito, who finished with 10 points. “I just saw the clock, knew it was running and shot it.”

“He saw the lane, took the shot and knew how much time on the clock,” Gomes said. “And he buried it.”

There were other moments just as big. The Hawks were dead down five with 2:38 left but got five points on back-to-back possessions from T.J. Weeks, including three from the line as Weeks finished with 26 and an impressive 10-for-10 on free throws.

In overtime, Hendricken trailed 60-56 with 30 seconds left but got two calm free throws from Mazzulla, who tied the game with 12 seconds left after Mount Pleasant's Enoch Cheeks missed the front end of a one-and-one.

The only time the Hawks really got out of character was the moment Fiorito's shot dropped, but game-winning buzzer-beaters have a way of getting the best of anyone.
