Highland Memorial Park unveils new searchable burial records database

Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, a non-profit, non-denominational garden cemetery located on 150-plus acres in Johnston, has launched a new website to electronically preserve the memories and histories of the individuals resting in its grounds.

The website, www.highlandmemorialparkcemetery.net, features a unique searchable history database. Visitors can search over 24,000 individual burial records available and view the memories, stories, photos and videos shared by family and friends.

Submissions to each record can be made free of charge on the loved ones Burial Records page on the site. Information may be uploaded in .jpeg, YouTube link and Word-style format, including but not limited to: military awards, military service, memories, funeral service details, pictures, videos and obituaries. Postings will take 72 hours to go live and all submissions are reviewed in advance for approval by cemetery staff.

Information posted can be printed and also shared via Facebook and Twitter.

“Families can now connect with our cemetery in new ways, and can bring history to life both for their own loved one and for the cemetery,” said Joseph Swift, president of Highland Memorial Park Cemetery. “This service is fairly new in New England and is considered cutting-edge in the industry. Families can visit the site using any device with Internet access, such as a computer, cell phone or tablet, to locate the deceased along with their associated detailed section map. The community as a whole will benefit from this service and we’re working to see that it grows. Once posted, these shared memories, stories and timeless photos are saved in perpetuity and passed on to future generations.”

Swift encourages the public to view a sample enhanced burial record by searching his late wife’s record, Helen Swift.

“You will see her photo and location details of her resting site here at Highland,” Swift said. “If one clicks on the ‘More Information/Condolences’ link, her newspaper obituary, remembrance notice and various photos can be viewed under ‘View Photos.’”

A courtesy kiosk will be installed on the property in the future for those visitors who otherwise do not have Internet access, which will be especially convenient for locating burial sites when the cemetery office is closed.

The website also contains detailed information about the cemetery, property, products and services available, memorial options, pre-arrangement information, prices, flower regulations, summary of events, and a contact page.

For more information, contact Joseph Swift at 231-9120 or email hmpjrs@cox.net.
