Honey Dew crew, regulars rally to help employee hit by 2 cars

A local coffee shop is raising money throughout February to help cover the medical expenses of an employee who was hit by two cars while leaving work.

Honey Dew Donuts on 1766 Warwick Avenue is calling the promotion, “Buy A Card, Give A Gift.” During February, the store will donate all the proceeds from gift cards sold to employee Amanda Andreoni, who is currently out of work while recovering from injuries sustained during the accident.

Andreoni was hit the evening of Jan. 4 by two separate vehicles while attempting to cross the northbound lane of Warwick Avenue after finishing her shift at Honey Dew Donuts. She was trying to get to a bus stop in order to take the bus to her home off Sandy Lane.

Andreoni called that section of Warwick Avenue a “bad stretch of road” that is poorly lit and where motorists frequently exceed the speed limit. She was wearing reflective clothing at the time of the accident and is thankful that her head was not hit.

Andreoni was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and is currently at Cedar Crest Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Cranston while recovering from a broken pelvis, seven broken ribs, a broken tailbone and a lacerated liver, among other injuries.

It is not just financial help Andreoni has received from Honey Dew, however. Andreoni said she has gotten a slew of get-well cards and gift cards from both her coworkers and regular customers.

“To know that the people I work for care that much about my situation, they’re so wonderful,” Andreoni said. “It’s so much easier knowing everyone is out there supporting me.”

She has not heard from either of the two drivers who struck her. No charges have been brought against either driver.

Melinda Hickey, a Honey Dew Warwick Avenue crewmember, has worked with Andreoni for just over a year. Upon hearing concern for Andreoni’s recovery from many of the store’s regular customers, she approached Bowen to ask what Honey Dew could do to help.

“I knew she really couldn’t afford to be out of work,” Hickey said. “I just wanted to do something to help.”

Hickey approached Honey Dew management to see what could be done for Andreoni, and there the idea for a promotion was born.

“When I heard about it, I felt awful,” said Bob Bowen, Honey Dew franchisee who has known Andreoni for about a year. “The employees love her, and the customers do, too.”

Andreoni said she has been “amazed” by the support she has received from the Honey Dew community.

“When my manager first called me to tell me [about the promotion] I was literally crying,” she said. “I have never heard of someone willing to do that. I didn’t know what to say, I was speechless. It’s going to be such a help”

So far, Hickey has been blown away by the generosity she has seen from community members.

“People who don’t even know her want to help out,” Hickey said. “It’s made me proud to live here.”

Community members interested in donating to Andreoni’s recovery can do so by purchasing gift cards at the Warwick Ave Honey Dew throughout February.

“Any little bit will help,” Hickey said.

    Wow.

Warwick people taking care of Warwick people.

    Great idea.

Melinda Hickey deserves the key to the City. She epitomizes what a Warwick leader should act like.

Bob Bowen knows how to hire great employees with great attitudes.

Happy Spring everyone. See you at Honeydew.
