The Warwick delegation in the House of Representatives, in a ceremony held May 14 at the State House, presented an $8,000 legislative grant to the Gaspee Days Committee to assist with this year’s Gaspee Days celebration.

This is the 50th anniversary of the staging of Gaspee Days in Pawtuxet Village, and the 50th year that the committee has presented the annual weekend of events that includes a re-enactment of the burning of the HMS Gaspee, an event that sparked the American Revolution.

The legislative grant will be used to paint the red, white and blue striping along Narragansett Parkway and for the police details that will be on hand during the weekend celebration and parade.

Members of the Warwick House delegation who helped obtain the grant include Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), Rep. David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston), Rep. Eileen S. Naughton (D-Dist. 21, Warwick), Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), Rep. Joseph A. Trillo (R-Dist. 24, Warwick), Rep. Patricia L. Morgan (D-Dist. 26, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick), Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry, Warwick) and Rep. Arthur Handy (D-Dist. 18, Cranston).

Members of the Gaspee Days Committee on hand for the check presentation, and who were recognized by the entire House chamber during Thursday’s floor session, were Erin Flynn, president; Jerry Peshka, first vice president; Karleen Wrath, past president; Carol Deming, past president; Tine Bingham, past president, and members Linda Deming, Diane Brewer and Gitorie Zanni.

The 2015 Gaspee Days activities will be held the weekend of June 13-14 and will include the Gaspee Days Parade on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Narragansett Parkway, and the symbolic burning of the British vessel HMS Gaspee at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 14. Several events are scheduled during the next month leading up to the celebration weekend, including an arts and crafts festival May 23-25, a Warwick Symphony Orchestra concert and fireworks at 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, and a 5K road race at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13.
