Hynes named USA assistant coach for World Cup of Hockey

Warwick native John Hynes will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at the upcoming World Cup of Hockey, set for Sept. 17 through Oct. 1 in Toronto.

The news was announced via a press release from USA Hockey last Friday.

Hynes, who currently serves as the head coach of the New Jersey Devils, won’t be the only Rhode Island native behind the bench for the stars and stripes, as New York Islanders head coach and Cranston native Jack Capuano also got an assistant nod.

They’ll be joined by Head Coach John Tortorella (Boston, Mass.) and fellow assistants Mike Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.), Scott Gordon (Easton, Mass.) and Phil Housley (South St. Paul, Minn.).

Hynes, who is currently in his first season as head coach of the Devils, has had nothing but success in recent years. Prior to coming to New Jersey, Hynes served as head coach of the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League for the last five seasons. Hynes led the Penguins to five consecutive 40-win seasons, making the playoffs in each of those seasons and reaching the conference finals twice. He was also named AHL Coach of the Year in 2011.

This won’t be the first time that Hynes will be representing his country, serving as a head coach for six seasons with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. Over that span, Hynes helped to lead three separate IIHF Men’s World Under-18 Championship teams to medals – gold in 2006, silver in 2008 and a bronze in 2004.

As for the upcoming World Cup, USA will be one of eight teams competing, with Canada, Czech Republic, Europe, Finland, North America, Russia and Finland rounding out the field.

General Managers of the eight teams have until March 2 to submit their initial 16-player rosters. They’ll then have to have their full 23-player rosters finalized by June 1.
