(Noisy, convoluted
sequel)
They’re back! Those nasty space aliens have returned to earth 20 years after the War of ‘96, and this time they have the firepower to destroy earth.
But wait. Earthlings didn’t sit on their heels after the last attack. They came together and planned for the possibility of a return attack.
Here’s the problem with this and many movies of its kind: Most of us don’t remember the characters and all the events of the last movie. We forgot how things were left, who lived and who died. The logical thing to do is to watch the previous movie before seeing the sequel. But that would be cruel and unusual punishment, especially for this one.
For example, Will Smith’s character is gone, but his son is there. Jeff Goldblum returns, as determined as ever. Bill Pullman’s character is there, but he has some serious psychological problems.
This time around we are spared the endless destruction of our cities, with most of the endless battles happening in space. There’s a female president who is something of a hawk, some young fighters who act like World War II pilots, and that scary Queen alien that must be destroyed.
All this goes on for two hours. It is noisy, convoluted and just too much to endure, even with some spectacular special effects.
Rated PG-13, with violence.
