Iggy’s Boardwalk Lobster & Clam Bar a welcome addition

What is the first word that comes to mind when you day “doughboys”?

Why “Iggy’s,” of course.

We’ve enjoyed many summer nights sitting on a picnic table, looking across the bay at the Newport Bridge, and eating Iggy’s seafood and doughboys.

Now you can get the famous doughboys in an ice cream sundae at a stand that fronts their latest venture, a casual sit-down dining experience.

We went to Iggy’s Boardwalk Lobster and Clam Bar on a cold winter night and enjoyed the warmth of a restaurant that is filled with atmosphere and good cheer.

The former barn of a building next door to the original has had a number of occupants over the years and has now been completely renovated, with a cozy bar on one side and a cozier restaurant on the other. In warm weather, there will be many outside tables.

If you like the seafood you have enjoyed next door over the years, you’ll recognize many of the items on the Boardwalk menu, including the doughboys, fish and chips and fried clams.

Recognizing that there may just be one or two people out there (probably visitors from Connecticut) who do not like seafood, they have added a number of meat items to the menu.

Fresh bread was brought to the table, along with a cup of chowder. For us, the only real clam chowder is the Rhode Island clear chowder, and Iggy’s has the perfect recipe.

The large menu begins with some innovative appetizers. We ordered the crab cakes, two large portions with a delicious remolaude sauce on the side. I like my crab cakes unadorned, enjoying the fresh taste of the crab, and saving the remolaude sauce for my French fries. (Try it, you’ll like it.)

A coupon in the Beacon/Herald was good for any appetizer and a basket of doughboys, which is a very good deal.

The crab cake appetizers, clams zuppa, and the Mussels Giovanni are $9.99 regularly.

For entrees, Joyce had the fried whole-belly Maine clams with French fries and cole slaw ($16.99). They were perfectly cooked, tasty and just a bit chewy, as they usually are at this time of year.

I chose the baked sea scallops, lightly dressed with Iggy’s tasty crumbs. Instead of the fries I chose a big serving of red potatoes and corn on the cob, which was surprisingly sweet and tender ($13.99).

Iggy’s Boardwalk also has a raw bar and lobster rolls that can be ordered hot or cold, making it one of the few places in Rhode Island where you can get a hot lobster roll (ur preference).

The bar has some unusual island-type drinks, including a Sunsetter, made with rum and fruit juices, which looked a lot like the Painkillers that are popular in St. Thomas. It is on our list for next time, along with that hot lobster roll.

Iggy’s is open year round. Sit by the windows, enjoy the view, and pretend it is summer.
