‘I’ll See You in My Dreams’ offers reality of both hope and despair

There are very few films aimed at the Senior Citizen market, and even fewer starring “mature” women.

“I’ll See You in My Dreams” breaks the mold, and gives veteran supporting actress Blythe Danner a chance to shine as Carol, a widower of 20 years who is depressed when her closest companion, her dog, dies.

She lives alone, unwilling to give up her independence by moving into the nearby senior retirement center, where she plays cards and golf with her three friends (Rhea Perlman, Mary Kay Place and Malin Akerman).

She spends time talking and drinking wine with her pool guy (Martin Starr), a young man still searching for meaning and direction in his life. The two connect on different levels, bringing out the generational differences that exist today.

Carol meets a handsome senior citizen (Sam Elliott) and he brings a brief sense of happiness, hope, and excitement into her life.

The conclusion has a sense of reality, and both hope and despair.

While this is not a great movie, it addresses the plight of the senior citizen, while also providing the still beautiful and still handsome Danner and Elliott a chance to show their great acting skills.

This is a movie for and about seniors that is the type of story you might find at a film festival.

Rated PG-13, with some profanity, sex, and a hilarious scene involving “the girls” and marijuana.
