Starting next Monday, July 18, The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) is instituting higher tolls for customers whose E-Zpass transponders are not properly mounted.
The transponders are causing safety issues and traffic problems and require a Newport Pell Bridge tollbooth employee to raise the gate.
The higher toll will be $2 per axle, which will be $4 for a passenger vehicle. Repeat offenders may be charged a $25 administration fee in addition to the toll. Serious repeat offenders may have to forfeit their transponder according to the authority.
RITBA launched a public information campaign to encourage proper transponder mounting on Monday, June 20. RITBA repeatedly had over a thousand motorists per month requiring assistance because of improperly mounted transponders.
The proper installation of an E-ZPass transponder is to pick a spot behind and to the right of the rearview mirror, 4” below the vehicle’s frame. Peel the plastic backing off the sticky surface of the fasteners. Then, with the E-ZPass logo facing you with the arrows pointing up, affix the transponder to the selected spot on the windshield, and press firmly into place and hold for one or two seconds.
