There were only winners Tuesday as Twin Rivers held its third Charity Blackjack Tournament. Following lunch the players – mostly legislators – headed to the tables to play blackjack. Each was given $2,000 in chips and told the minimum wager was $100. After five rounds, the player with the most money in chips advanced to the championship table. While the chips could not be traded in for money, the stakes were high. Each of the players was playing for a non-profit with a guarantee of winning them at least $1,000 and as much as $10,000 if they were the grand winner at the championship table. Fred Smerlas of Fred & Steve’s Stake House won the grand prize for the Women’s Center of Rhode Island. In all, Twin River gave away $60,000 in the afternoon. In the course of the three tournaments it has donated $140,000 to Rhode Island non-profits. Above, at the championship table Sen. Frank Lombardi applauds as from left, Michael Sabitoni, Rep. Michael Morin, Smerlas and Karen Buckley look on. At left, Sen. William Walaska and Rep. Scott Slater are hopeful of good cards.(Warwick Beacon photos)
