The Psychological Horror of Val Lewton: A Halloween Film Series will be shown at the Warwick Public Library on Thursdays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29 at 7 p.m.
Movie producer Val Lewton had a poetic and brooding soul. Given sensational movie titles by his bosses at RKO studio, he rose above their brashness to create profound and sensitive horror films.
On Oct. 15 shiver at “Cat People” (1942), starring Simone Simon and Kent Smith. Fashion designer Irena Dubrovna believes she’s part of an ancient Serbian race that turns into panthers when they’re sexually aroused.
On Oct. 22, cower at “I Walked with a Zombie” (1943), starring Tom Conway and Frances Dee. Betsy Connell, a nurse caring for the wife of a Caribbean plantation owner, discovers that voodoo may be the cause of the wife’s illness.
On Oct. 29, shudder at “The Seventh Victim” (1943), starring Kim Hunter and Hugh Beaumont. A cult of Greenwich Village devil worshippers attempt to coerce Jacqueline Gibson, a member who wants out, to commit suicide.
