Inaugural walk to fight leading cancer killer of women is June 13

On June 13 people will be walking in City Park to fight the number one cancer killer of women: lung cancer.

According to the American Lung Association, less than one percent of women polled knew that lung cancer was the top killer, most women believe breast cancer is the highest. Lung cancer kills twice as many women as any other cancer, and less than half of the women diagnosed survive more than a year after diagnosis. Every five minutes a woman is diagnosed with lung cancer.

Shannon Deegan, a development associate for the American Lung Association of the Northeast, said, “We are facing a crisis.”

To raise awareness for the disease and fund-raise for research, the American Lung Association, in partnership with CVS, started Lung Force, a national movement “uniting women in the fight against lung cancer and promoting lung health.”

All over the country Lung Force is holding walks to spread the word, and Rhode Island will be hosting their own June 13 at City Park. There is no registration fee, but Deegan said the lung association is encouraging participants to fundraise.

Already, Deegan said 300 people have registered and raised more than $35,000. The fundraising goal for the Lung Force Walk is $70,000.

Deegan said that the walk has three goals: to “educate and empower” women and healthcare professionals, raise funds for research and cause women to care as well as act for the movement.

People can register as an individual or as a team and at the event awards will be given for most spirited, largest team, biggest fundraiser among other things.

There will also be “mission tents” at the event where participants will have an opportunity to interact with advocacy options, from available programs offered by the American Lung Association, a VIP tent for those who raise over $500 and a social media tent to share the event online.

“This is not your average walk,” Deegan said. “When we are all walking together we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”

The Lung Force Walk will be on June 13 in City Park along Buttonwoods Beach. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. and day of registration begins at 8 a.m.

All participants are encouraged to wear turquoise, the color of the lung cancer awareness movement.
