To the Editor:
It is with tears in my eyes that I notify you that Rhode Island has just lost the man whom we believe to be the oldest World War II Veteran in our state.
Arthur Jeremiah Latham Jr., a 106-year-old gentleman who achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer when he served on active duty in the United States Navy, Pacific Theater, has left us.
It truly was an honor for those of us who knew him and his family. He exemplified the true American virtues: faith in God, love for his country, his family and his fellow man. Mr. Latham (Jerry) was a leader in the generation that believed in dedication to our country, hard work, decency, a value system that always knew right from wrong and a strong faith. He was married to his beautiful bride, Doris Salisbury Latham, for 76 years and she was by his side when he passed. The younger generation need look nowhere else for a positive role model…here was a man.
