John A. Hayes, 86, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Greenwich Farms, Warwick, RI, surrounded by family. John leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret (McDade) Hayes.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late John and Rose (Smith) Hayes, he lived in New City, NY for 45 years, moving to Florida and summering in Snug Harbor, RI in 2007. Since 2010 he resided at Greenwich Farms. John was a proud Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the New York Police Department as a Sergeant, last serving with the 32 precinct, Harlem, New York. He was also a collection manager for 18 years for Port Brokers Group in New York. He was active member and a past commander with the New City American Legion and was a member Haverstraw Elks. The family wishes to thank the staff of Greenwich Farms and CNE Hospice for their care and support.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving family, children: Margaret Hayes Cote (the late Jerry) of Wakefield, RI; John Hayes (Dorothy) of Rochester, NY; Lance Hayes (Kerry) of West Wareham, MA; Kathleen Laux (Paul) of Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Eileen Hayes of North Fork, CA; 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Ann Anderson of Morristown, NJ, Gertrude Scarpinato of Smithtown, NY, Michael Hayes of Deer Park, NY, Rosemarie Struck of Norwich, CT, Bernadette Flynn of Brooklyn, NY and Joseph Hayes of Albuquerque, NM and the late Alice Degnan, Jane Patterson, Antoinette Hayes, Eugene Hayes, Daniel Hayes and Matthew Hayes. He will be deeply missed by all.

A celebration of his life was held Monday, September 29, at the Higgins Funeral Home, South Main Street, New City, NY with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Augustine Church, New City. Burial with military honors in St. Anthony Cemetery, Nanuet, NY.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Friday, October 24 at 9:00 a.m. in St. William Church, Pettaconsett Ave., Warwick
