Johnston Historical Society yard sale to continue this weekend

“This was so much fun, we decided to do it again,” Anthony Ursillo said as he stood under Saturday’s sparking sun in front of the former Shang Bailey Roadhouse. “We had hoped for a higher figure, but four hundred bucks ain’t bad for a small, non-profit group.”

Ursillo was speaking about the Johnston Historical Society’s most recent success story – Saturday’s yard sale, which attracted shoppers from all corners of the state and even nearby Connecticut.

In fact, the yard sale – which featured a myriad of what Ursillo called “terrific treasures” – was such a smashing success that society officials decided to hold another yard sale this Saturday, Oct. 22, at the same location, which is also the former Log Gift & Curtain Shoppe located at 2737 Hartford Ave. in Johnston.

“Same location, same time,” Ursillo told bargain hunters who took in the afternoon portion of the sale. “We’ll be back here this Saturday at 8 a.m. and working well into the afternoon. If there’s rain, we’ll be here Sunday.”

There’s one thing Ursillo didn’t divulge about this weekend’s yard sale, and that was whether or not his vintage black cloak – which is an original dating back to the 1920s – will be among the items on sale this weekend.

Ursillo did say the society’s entire membership – including president Louis McGowan – was impressed and thankful that upwards of 100 people turned out for last weekend’s event.

“People were telling us this was a good, old fashioned yard sale,” Ursillo said. “The first of our valued treasure hunters started rolling in around 8 o’clock and were eager to find that interesting acquisition.”

The society meets the last Wednesday of every month, excluding July and August, at the Museum Barn located next to the Elijah Angell House at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston. It is always accepting new memberships, which are priced at $20 for one person and $30 per family. For more information, call 401-231-3380.
