Marijuana growing operation near school busted; East Providence man charged

38 plants with estimated street value of $28K seized

An East Providence man is facing charges after a marijuana growing operation was uncovered last week in Johnston.

Mason F. Dourado, 22, of 187 Hatton St., is charged with manufacturing/possessing marijuana and cultivating/manufacturing marijuana in a school zone. He was arraigned in Third District Court on June 24 and held on $10,000 surety bail.

According to a press release from Johnston Police Maj. Frank Levesque, Johnston Fire Department personnel notified police of the marijuana operation on June 17 while conducting a smoke and carbon monoxide detector inspection at 67 Winfield Road, which is roughly 400 feet away from Winsor Hill Elementary School.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the property, which Levesque said resulted in the seizure of 38 mature marijuana plants with an approximate street value of $28,000, along with other narcotics-related equipment and paraphernalia.

Levesque said further investigation conducted by Detective Anthony Sasso revealed Dourado was renting the home, but did not reside there and “used it primarily to cultivate and distribute marijuana.”

Levesque praised Sasso for his work on the case.

“He did a great job,” the major said.

Another example of why marijuana should be legalized and regulated.

Put the black market out of business, start a new industry and bring new jobs and tax revenue.
