Justify the spending

To the Editor:

Beacon readers, you have just been slapped in the face yet again. Your Congress has just shown you exactly where you stand. Congress will appropriate 4 billion dollars for the National Cancer Institute this year in an effort to find a cure for cancer, which is money well spent, as all of us have been touched by cancer in our families, but is 4 billion for cancer research enough?

Well, consider this: Congress will appropriate $5 billion of taxpayer money, and give it to a foreign nation, of which, just about all of that money will be used to buy military weapons. While cutting Medicare and Food Stamps for America’s needy, and leaving homeless veterans to live under bridges subject to imminent collapse, your Congress is increasing annual aid to one foreign nation to $5 billion per year, which is one billion dollars more than Congress will appropriate for finding a cure to cancer.

Does that make any sense at all? If you ever get to question your Congressman, challenge him.  The next time you vote, ask yourself why should I vote for them?  This political spending defies logic, and is highly insulting. I challenge readers to justify this kind of spending, or for that matter, I challenge you to defend your voting for such characters.

    Dear Mr. Clifford,

I agree that we need to find a cure for cancer. I just don't know if spending it on research doctors that would lose their job if they actually found a cure, is the right move. I would favor a reward program that gives a big chunk of money to anyone who finds a verifiable cure. I even thought of starting that charity myself. I believe that if we had a large amount of money (say $10,000,000), we'd find a cure for cancer by years end! But spending more on politics than charity, i agree, is "defying logic".

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family,

    Dear Mr Corrente.

You said: " I believe that if we had a large amount of money (say $10,000,000), we'd find a cure for cancer by years end! " No kidding, I agree. We currently spend 4 billion per year on cancer research, but if you add to that the 5 billion we give to a very wealth country per year, that is 9 billion, and we will, as you say, have the cure for cancer.

The 5 billion that we will give away, by the way is every year for the next ten, so we are talking giving $50 billion away to a wealthy country t hat could be much better spent on finding a cure for cancer right here in our own country.

By the way to add insult to injury while giving 5 billion to a very wealthy country, we give 1.6 million to one of the poorest nations on earth, Haiti, who in addition to being poor lost over 200.000 lives two years again an an earthquake.

Perhaps while running for office you could make a campaign promise to take the 5 billion "give away money", and spend it on cancer research? Overwhelmingly Americans would support your idea, but it would be political suicide.

Why don't you identify the country that receives 5 billion?

    Dear Mr. Clifford,

Although I totally agree with you I have to remain laser-focused on the City of Warwick. We have lost over 5,800 taxpayers and 4,666 businesses in the last ten years alone. My job is to get them back and I have a plan to do just that. Please log on to www.correntemayorwarwick.com.

    Have a pleasant Thanksgiving.

Richard Corrente: "Laser-Focused", quite the Democratic buzz word. I recall hearing the same term being used in a rally for Gina Raimndo when running for Governor...Hilary Clinton promised us that if elected, Ms. Raimondo would be "laser-focused" on creating jobs, jobs, jobs...I think we have all seen the "result" of that. Maybe tone down the party rhetoric..... Will you also be warning is how "Climate Change" is our most serious security threat? I've lived next to the water for over 15 years. I can assure you we won't be under water for quite some time, even though it was predicted we should have been under this year.... What this city, state and country needs are people with real ideas, fresh concepts. Now politicians spewing the same old party line drivel that has got is nothing but higher taxes, more fees and more debt. (And we are still waiting for those laser-focused jobs, jobs jobs....)
