Keep the focus on small business

To the Editor:

Within the last couple of days, we have seen a number of new investments in our city. I had the honor of attending a ribbon cutting for Distinctive Dance on Post Road in Greenwood, and the planning board recently granted preliminary approval for two major land development projects on Warwick Avenue and West Shore Road. Small businesses are vital to our community. Their success creates jobs and strengthens our local economy. As highlighted in the June 14 Beacon article, the two projects currently before the planning board could bring in 40-plus new full- and part-time jobs along with thousands of dollars in new tax revenue, some of which will come from land that has been dormant for the past 10 years. This is exactly the type of activity the city should be focusing on.

At the 12th annual America’s Small Business Summit in Washington, D.C. this week, I had the pleasure of meeting with small business owners from across the country to discuss their daily challenges and best practices. Throughout our talks, one major theme was clear: cities and states must work together with small businesses for the good of their communities. The more new jobs and tax revenue we can bring to the city, the stronger our community becomes. New revenue allows us to invest in our infrastructure, our schools, and many other worthy causes. I applaud anyone who decides to start his or her own business and am especially grateful to those who choose to do so here in Warwick. Let’s hope our great city continues to serve as a partner in their success.

    Dear Steve,

I enjoyed reading your remarks about wanting to "applaud anyone who decides to start his or her own business...here in Warwick." Please join me in support of offering tax rebate checks to anyone who opens a brick-and-mortar business. Start-up New York is an organization that will eliminate taxes for ten years if you relocate there. I feel we can entice a few businesses from Cranston or Providence, and when they locate in Warwick they will bring jobs and taxpayers with them. That's something, I think you agree, Warwick desperately needs. In the last ten years Warwick has lost 5,800 taxpayers and 4,666 businesses. We need to reverse that trend. Tax rebate checks will go a long way. So will eliminating building permit fees for two years to stimulate construction that will bring in additional tax revenue forever. Do you agree that these ideas will bring in "more jobs and tax revenue"?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks Steve.
