Citing his opposition to tolls, and support for both a constitutional convention and the establishment of terms limits for lawmakers, Republican Jonathan Keith has announced his candidacy for the District 27 seat in the state Senate.
“Let’s put our voice back in front and be heard over the special interest groups. Let’s make 2016 the year that we take back our seat,” Keith said through a news release. “I’m energized and eager to begin knocking on doors come this spring.”
Sen. Hanna Gallo, who was first elected to the legislature in 1998, currently holds the District 27 seat. She is best known for her work on educational issues, including the state’s funding formula and the expansion of all-day kindergarten.
Keith, originally from Newport and currently employed at Taco Inc., held a kick-off fundraiser for his campaign last week at Chelo’s on Reservoir Avenue.
Keith has been active in local Republican politics, and ran unsuccessfully for the Ward 5 seat on the Cranston School Committee in 2014. He currently serves on the city’s Traffic Safety Commission.
He and his wife moved to Cranston several years ago after living for a time in Providence. They have two children.
According to his campaign’s website, jonkeithsenateri.com, Keith supports reduced taxes; increased state funding for park improvements and safe streets; an independent investigation of the 38 Studios deal; and greater government transparency.
“I hope to restore our faith in local politics and bring back a common sense approach to key issues facing our state,” Keith writes in a biography on his website. “Most important to me above all is serving strictly according to the [Rhode Island] Constitution, and provide a fiscally responsible approach to future state budgets and project funding.”
