Kent resident physicians place first in national research competitions

Two Kent Hospital emergency medicine residents have each taken first place in two separate research competitions held by the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine (FOEM) earlier this year.

Jill Donofrio, DO, MPH, of Fontana, Calif., a PGY4 emergency medicine resident, took first place in the FOEM Research Paper Competition. This competition took place at the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) Scientific Assembly in Denver, Colo. Donofrio’s award-winning research paper was titled, “Carotid Ultrasound and the Emergency Department Physician: A Validation Study.” An award ceremony was held at the 2012 FOEM Legacy Gala on Oct. 16 in Denver.

Sarah Whyte, DO, of Wilmington, Ill., a PGY4 emergency medicine resident, took first place in the FOEM 2012 Case Study Poster Competition. This competition was held in April at the ACOEP Spring Seminar in Scottsdale, Ariz. Whyte’s case study was titled, “Lisinopril Induced Angioedema Requiring Emergent Cricothyrotomy,” and was based on a 49-year-old patient who came to Kent Hospital with shortness of breath and an emergent Cricothyrotomy was performed.

“It is extremely rewarding to see residents from our emergency medicine residency program being recognized nationwide,” said Joseph Spinale, DO, FACC, director of medical education at Kent. “The research our residents conduct is extremely beneficial to not only our patients and the field of medicine, but to the medical education program here at Kent. I congratulate Dr. Donofrio and Dr. Whyte on this great accomplishment.”

Kent Hospital is a major teaching affiliate of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. Graduate Medical Education at Kent started in 2008 and currently has 38 residents and 1 fellow enrolled in all four programs. Kent Hospital is proud to provide physician residents from across the country with the clinical expertise they will need to carry on their careers in medicine.
