The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team hosted the American International College Yellow Jackets JV team on Sunday. The Knights came away with the victory by the score of 3-1. The win put the Knights at 3-3 on the year and now makes it two wins in a row for CCRI.

The Knights started off the game with great intensity that led to some first half scoring. The first goal was scored on a play where sophomore Zach Bromage (Warwick, R.I.) had a perfect throw in pass to a streaking Kyle Courtney (Cumberland, R.I.) who dribbled by several defenders then fired a shot that found its way to the netting. Not too long after that goal, the Knights’ aggressive play led to another attack. Courtney was in the middle of it again by dribbling through some more defenders before passing the ball off to Sindio Freitas (Cape Verde), who was flying through the defense. Freitas took the pass and turned it into a goal with a great shot to the top of the net.

The Knights’ second half goal came from freshman Shane Iannelli (North Kingstown, R.I.), who took a free kick from the right side of the field that amazingly found its way into the net. The Knights’ players scrambled in front of the net and made it very chaotic for the Yellow Jackets’ goalie and defenders. The play worked perfectly and gave the Knights a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Knights allowed a goal at the 22-minute mark, but that was the only blip in a well-played game by the Knights. The defense was led by Brandon Iannelli (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Bromage, who worked hard all day while also creating good chemistry with keeper Christian Ellerbe (North Kingstown, R.I.), who started his first game of the season.

Head Coach Gabe Toro was satisfied with the way his team played and had this to say, “We did a great job today pushing forward on offense and having an aggressive mindset. Guys like Ben Boahin (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Aris Santiago (Seekonk, Mass.) didn’t score, but their continuous effort to push the ball forward was key in the game plan and earning a win.

The Knights’ next game will be at home today when they take on Holyoke Community College at 4 p.m. in a Region XXI matchup. It’s a big game for the Knights as every Region XXI matchup is vital.
