The CCRI Knights faced off against Region XXI opponent UConn Avery-Point last Wednesday night in the consolation game of the CCRI Holiday Classic. The Knights won easily with a 90-58 victory over UCAP. The Knights are now 9-6 on the season with a 7-2 Region XXI record.

The Knights started slow, falling behind 11-4 early. Freshman Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Adrian La Fleur (Sydney, Australia) turned things around quickly with a barrage of 3-pointers to get the Knights going. Vazquez finished the first half with 11 points and three 3-pointers made, while La Fleur knocked down two 3-pointers on his way to 10 first-half points. Josh Mann (Detroit, Mich.) dominated the paint on his way to a team-high 12 first-half points. The Knights cruised into halftime with a 42-26 advantage.

The Knights held their lead throughout the second half, outscoring UCAP 58-32 in the half. The Knights’ offense was fueled by great ball movement, which was shown by the team’s 20 assists. Tri-captain Joe Santiago (Willimantic, Conn.) finished with a team-high five dimes to go along with three rebounds for the point guard.

Mann led the Knights with 20 points on the night, while also adding nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Vazquez finished with 16 points and four made 3-pointers and La Fleur finished with 15 points and three made 3-pointers.

Tri-captain Edvaldo Ferreira had another double-double for the Knights with 10 points and 10 boards to go along with four blocks. Jordan Grant (New London, Conn.) added 10 points and nine boards; Mike DeJesus had 11 points and three 3-pointers to round out the Knights’ offensive attack.

Head coach Rick Harris had this to say after the game: “We are glad to get a win going into another break. We have a week to get better and going into it with a win is always a positive.”

The Knights’ next game is Saturday, Jan. 9, in the CCRI Invitational, where there will be four games played between men and women’s basketball on both Saturday and Sunday.
