The CCRI women’s soccer team took care of business last Wednesday against the Massasoit Community College Warriors, 5-1, in Lincoln. The Lady Knights’ season record now stands at 8-4 overall and 4-0 in Region XXI play.

It didn’t take the Lady Knights long to get on the board, as sophomore midfielder Catherine Lopes (Warren, R.I.) scored an unassisted goal in the 8th minute of play. Lopes placed a beautiful shot into the upper corner of the goal over the outstretched Massasoit goalkeeper to give CCRI the quick 1-0 lead.

Just six minutes later, Lopes struck again, scoring on a nice pass from sophomore defender Ricki Beaufort (Warwick, R.I.) to up the Lady Knights’ advantage to 2-0.

With approximately eight minutes remaining in the half, CCRI sophomore forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored an unassisted goal, giving the Lady Knights a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

As the second of play began, CCRI continued to dominate the Warriors, creating many scoring chances.

In the thirteenth minute of play, freshman forward Emma Manosh (Warwick, R.I.) scored the Lady Knights’ fourth goal of the game on a nice pass from Lopes.

With eight minutes remaining in the half, Manosh scored her second goal of the half off of a long throw-in from sophomore Amber Duhamel (Pawtucket, R.I.), giving CCRI a commanding 5-0 lead.

Just a minute later, Massasoit got on the board to make the final score 5-1.

Lopes led all scorers with two goals and one assist and Manosh tallied twice. Sophomore defender Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, R.I.) played a tremendous defensive game, shutting down the Warriors’ leading scorer Shelby Sprague, who is ranked No.2 by the NJCAA.

Knights downed by Massasoit CC

In a Region XXI showdown, the CCRI Knights men’s soccer team traveled to Brockton, Mass. to face off against the Warriors of Massasoit Community College. The Knights failed to come back home with a win and took the loss to Massasoit by the score of 6-1. The loss now puts CCRI at 2-9 on the year and 0-6 in Region XXI play.

CCRI held strong for the first 20 minutes, as it played an even game until Massasoit finally broke through. Massasoit would score twice in the first half to take a 2-0 halftime lead over the Knights.

The second half didn’t bring much change to the game, as the Knights would be outscored 4-1 to bring the final score to 6-1. Cyrus Wiefue (Providence, R.I.) scored the lone Knights’ goal in the game with about ten minutes left. Josh Sandin (Warwick, R.I.) was able to get the ball into the box where he found Wiefue for the goal.

Head Coach Gabe Toro had this to say about the game: “Our offense was just not able to get in the flow of things. We couldn’t maintain possession of the ball and it led to a dead offense.”
