Lady Knights fall in OT to CCBC Essex

The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team lost a heartbreaker at home on Sunday against CCBC Essex from Maryland. The Lady Knights fell by the score of 1-0 in a hard-fought overtime game. The loss dropped the Lady Knights to 7-4 on the year.

The Lady Knights looked to be in control for most of the game, forcing the ball into the offensive end and making CCBC work on defense.

The Lady Knights just couldn’t get the ball into the net, though, and it became much more difficult as the game went on. Corner kicks and scrambles in front of the net led to some close shots and even balls that clanked off the posts, but the Lady Knights couldn’t get on the board. Once the whistle sounded for the end of regulation, the score was still deadlocked at 0-0.

In overtime, the Lady Knights came out strong, looking to end the game. In the first minute, sophomore Catherine Lopes (Warren, R.I.) launched a corner kick into the front of the goal, but the Lady Knights could not convert on it. That was the Lady Knights’ best chance to end the game.

In the 9th minute of overtime, CCBC managed to get the ball into a scramble in front of CCRI’s goal. The ball never seemed to be controlled by any player, but managed to find its way inches past the goal line to give CCBC Essex a 1-0 victory.

Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game, “We just do not seem to be hungry enough around the goal and we did not make the most of our opportunities today. Give credit to the Essex squad as they were a very determined bunch. Our team needs to dig a little deeper in these types of games where the teams play even and the game is on the line.”

The Lady Knights were set to host Massasoit Community College on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

Knights fall to undefeated Monroe College

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team traveled to New Rochelle, N.Y. on Saturday to face Monroe College for a 7 p.m. matchup under the lights. The Knights lost the game by the score of 5-0, as Monroe continued its undefeated season. The Knights fell to 2-8 on the year.

The Knights’ defense held strong for the first 20 minutes of the game before Monroe got on the board. The Knights tried to control the ball and make their opponent play their game, but every time the Knights made a mistake Monroe would capitalize.

Jonathan Almeida (Pawtucket, R.I.) played well for the Knights as he was asked to play the solo forward position during the game. There was only so much he could do, but was still able to ignite some offensive chances for the Knights.

The Monroe offense proved to be too strong, netting five goals en route to picking up the win.

Tri-captain Steven Zelepos (Stonington, Conn.) and freshman Christian Ellerbe (North Kingstown, R.I.) both played a half in goal, but were under duress the whole game.

The Knights traveled to play Massasoit on Wednesday, but those results were also unavailable at press time.
