Lady Knights fall to D-I power ASA College

Posted

The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Division I Avengers of ASA College from New York, N.Y. on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Knights lost to the D-I Avengers 74-50.

With the loss, the Lady Knights drop to 6-15 on the season, while the Avengers improve to 12-4 on the season.

The Lady Knights had quite the task on Tuesday evening, as they hosted a very tall and talented ASA College squad that came into the contest with an 11-4 record. The Avengers feature a line-up with six players measuring 5-foot-11 or over, while CCRI has one player that measures that tall.

The Lady Knights came ready to play as they played closely with the Avengers in the first half, before going into the break trailing by 10 points, 33-23.

In the second half, ASA ratcheted-up the full-court pressure and scored the first 12 points to take a 45-23 lead. Making matters worse, the Lady Knights had two starters with four fouls, which helped ASA increase their lead before going on to win by the final count of 74-50.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was freshman Jennifer Cicero (West Greenwich, R.I.), who scored a career-high 17 points, including a 3-pointer and four rebounds. Cicero was helped by captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, Ariz.), who scored 12 points with four assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Also helping CCRI was freshman Lyric Artis (Albany, N.Y.) with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds, captain Amber Edwards (Boston, Mass.) with seven points, including a 3-pointer with five rebounds and two assists and captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, N.Y.), who added six points, seven rebounds and four assists. ASA was led by Diandra Darosa (Pawtucket, R.I.) with a game-high 19 points.

Knights lose heartbreaker at Orange County CC

The CCRI Knights traveled to Middletown, N.Y. on Saturday to take on the 7-10 Colts of Orange County Community College. The Knights lost to the Colts 81-78. The loss drops CCRI’s record to 11-12 while Orange County improves to 8-11.

The Knights jumped out early and parlayed that into a 43-35 halftime advantage. During the first half, CCRI was able to get the ball inside to their freshman center Grant Gillis (Jamestown, R.I.), who was able to score in the paint at will. CCRI’s defense made the Colts rely on outside shooting for their scoring opportunities.

The second half was similar, however, as the Colts began to hit more and more outside shots and the Knights’ lack of defensive rebounding allowed the Colts to have multiple second-chance scoring opportunities.

Additionally, Orange County’s full-court press rattled the Knights and caused several key turnovers. The Colts tied the game, 70-70, with 4:35 remaining in the game then surged ahead, scoring five unanswered points to go up 75-70 with just 2:43 to go.

The Knights battled back and had a chance to tie the game at 79 when Gillis was fouled on a layup attempt with 2.4 seconds to go. Unfortunately, he missed the first free throw then hit the second to put the Knights down, 79-78. CCRI set-up its full-court press on the inbounds pass and thought it had a steal, but a foul was called on tri-captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.). The foul put Orange County on the line, where it made both shots. Jerome Harris (Hartford, Conn.) had a desperation heave at the buzzer that would’ve tied the game, but it just missed.

The Knights were led by Gillis, who scored a game-high 23 points with eight rebounds, followed by Jernigan, who hit for 18 points, while dishing-out seven assists.

Also helping CCRI was tri-captain Malieke Young (Providence, R.I.) with nine points on three 3-pointers and Marshall Nelson (Perth, Australia), who returned for the Knights to add eight points, including two 3-pointers with four assists.
