Lady Knights knock off Essex

The CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Orange, N.J. on Sunday to face off against the Wolverines of Essex County College. The Lady Knights defeated the wolverines 2-1. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 6-3-1 on the season.

In its previous game, CCRI battled Mercer to a 0-0 tie.

In the 36th minute of play, the lady Knights broke through when freshman forward Kyanna Ivey-Jones (Pawtucket) scored on a pass from freshman midfielder Kendra Levesque (Warwick).  Ivey-Jones placed the ball along the ground under the Essex goalkeeper, giving CCRI a 1-0 halftime lead.

Two and a half minutes into the second half, Essex midfielder Marie Alidou scored to tie the game.

As the half continued, the Lady Knights seemed to start to take the game over threatening the Essex goal. In the 36th minute, Essex was whistled for a handball in the box, giving the Lady Knights a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Stepheny Perez (Providence) stepped to the line and blasted the ball past the goalkeeper to give CCRI the lead and the win.

“Coach Bannan and I are very proud of our team’s performance today and yesterday,” said head coach Dennis Grassini.  “Playing back to back games on the road with many having minor injuries is a difficult thing but our players showed us today that they have a lot of fight in them.”

Anderson leads Knights at Tri-State Open

Ian Anderson (Warwick, RI) finished 62nd out of 104 runners to lead the Knights’ cross country team at CCRI’s Tri-State Open on Saturday.

Anderson finished with a time of 32 minutes 50.62 seconds, while Jared Gruslin (North Smithfield) finished in 66th with a time of 33:03.63. Sophomore Joe Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass.) placed 84th in a time of 35:17.28 and Nelson Moreno (Central Falls), who was running in his first-ever cross country race, placed 92nd with a time of 37:33.34.

The Knights now have a week off, which will allow the team to work on improvements for the remaining races of the season.

CCRI will return to action on Friday, Oct. 17, when the Knights compete in the Emmanuel College Saints Invite in Boston. That will be followed by the Boston Mayors’ Cup on Sunday, Oct. 26, and the CCRI Northeast Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Knights fall 2-0 to

Monroe College

The CCRI men’s soccer team lost a hard-fought game, 2-0, to Monroe College on Saturday afternoon at the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. With the loss, the Knights fell to 2-7-1 on the season and remained 2-2-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights were put in an early hole, as Monroe’s Fabian Burnett found the back of the net just 48 seconds into the game, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. However, after coming out sluggish, CCRI’s defense picked up the pace and neutralized Monroe to take a 1-0 game into halftime.

Due to a yellow card in the Knights’ defense, sophomore Chris Quinn (Cranston) was moved back to defense in the second half. Quinn, who played defense for the Knights last year, thrived in his natural position, minimizing any offensive chance for Monroe.

Late in the game, the Knights pushed up in an attempt to score a goal, and got spread out. During this time, Monroe was able to add an insurance goal, with Kalifa Sylla burying a shot in the 87th minute.

CCRI keeper Alex Padilla (Cranston) played outstanding in the loss, turning aside 13 of Monroe’s 15 shots on goal to keep his team in the game.
