Lady Knights roll to two straight wins

The CCRI women’s soccer team improved to 8-6-1 with a 9-0 victory over Massasoit last Wednesday and a 6-2 victory over Bryant & Stratton on Sunday.

Against Region XXI rival Massasoit, the Lady Knights got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes of the game. Freshman forward Selena Canales (Cranston) scored on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Just two minutes later freshman midfielder Stepheny Perez (Providence) scored an unassisted goal. A minute later sophomore defender Taylor Lopes (Cumberland) scored on a pass from Talia Geremia (Warwick) giving CCRI a 3-0 advantage.

Then in the 29th minute freshman midfielder Carla Porras (Narragansett) scored off of a corner kick delivered by Perez, making the score 4-0 at the half.

CCRI continued its dominance in the second half with five more goals. Perez finished with a hat trick, Canales and Porras scored two goals apiece and Lopes and Geremia scored one each. The Lady Knights remained unbeaten in Region XXI play with the victory.

On Sunday, the Lady Knights hosted Bryant & Stratton from Syracuse, N.Y., and got on the scoreboard quickly. Right after the opening kickoff they put the ball deep in the Bobcats’ end of the field and forced a quick corner kick. Perez played a beautiful kick and Porras headed the ball into the corner of the goal just 33 seconds into the match for the 1-0 lead.

This quick goal would set the tone for the rest of the match. Less than five minutes later sophomore Tri-Captain Paige Oram (Burrillville) scored an unassisted goal off a rebound, giving the Lady Knights a 2-0 advantage. After coming up empty on a few more chances, Oram tallied her second goal of the match for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Bryant & Stratton broke through early in the second half to make it 3-1, but Oram struck again 10 minutes late. And after another 10 minutes, Oram scored one more time, her fourth goal of the game, to make it 5-1. The Bobcats got it to 5-2, but Missy Richards (Coventry) made it 6-2 with under three minutes left.

Knights give up late lead, fall to Massasoit 6-3

The CCRI men’s soccer team fell 6-3 to Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon, as the Knights surrendered four goals in the last 20 minutes of play after holding a 3-2 lead.

The Knights came out hungry for a win after falling to Massasoit 6-0 at home earlier this season. That intensity showed early in the game, as Clarence Early (Portsmouth) and Abel Quiroa (Providence) scored first-half goals off nice crosses into the box to give the Knights the lead.

In the second half, the Knights put Massasoit on the ropes when Freddy Korsah (Accra, Ghana) made a nice pass to Matt Bulmer (Dayville, Conn.), who took a few touches and blasted the ball to the back of the net.

The Knights found themselves up 3-2 with 20 minutes left in the game but made some poor decisions protecting the ball and Massasoit capitalized on their opportunities. Trailing 4-3, CCRI was pressing to get the tying goal, leading to two late goals in the final minutes for Massasoit.

A bright spot in the loss was sophomore captain Luis Navas (Pawtucket).

“Our coaching staff is lucky to have him back for his second year,” head coach Gabe Toro said. “He plays with incredible spirit and effort and always makes a big difference in all of our games. The captain has earned the respect of all his peers and coaching staff.”

The Lady Knights narrowly won the first set against Montgomery, riding nine kills by Janna Cabrera (Providence) and 13 assists by Alyssa Salinas (Corpus Christi, Texas).
