Lady Knights soccer out to 1-0 start after win over CCBC-Essex

The 2014 CCRI women’s soccer team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland this past weekend to kick-off its 2014 season.  After having its first match cancelled at Montgomery College on Saturday due to poor field conditions, the Lady Knights squared off against the Community College of Baltimore County-Essex on Sunday and defeated the Knights of CCBC-Essex 3-0. With the victory the Lady Knights begin the season 1-0.

As the match began, CCRI dominated the play throughout the entire first half, putting the CCBC-Essex Knights back on their heels. With 19 minutes left in the half, freshman forward Anete Encarnacao (Pawtucket) headed the ball into the top left corner of the Essex goal, giving CCRI a 1-0 advantage. Assisting on the play was freshman forward Catherine Lopes (Warren). Just three minutes later, Lopes tallied a goal of her own, placing a long-range shot from approximately 20 yards out high and over the head of Essex’s goalkeeper Erika Proulx, giving the Lady Knights a 2-0 lead at the half. There was no assist on the play. In addition to the scoring, freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Kilburn (Norton, Mass.) made a few outstanding saves in the half for CCRI.

As the second half began, Essex came out hard, generating some very good scoring opportunities, but Kilburn continued to make some excellent saves – including a breakaway – to keep Essex scoreless. With just 12 minutes left in the game, freshman Anete Encarnacao came-up big again as she dribbled through the Essex defense and scored her second goal of the match, unassisted, placing the ball along the ground to the far corner of the net to give CCRI a 3-0 lead and eventually the win.

“Coach Bannan and I are pleased with our team’s effort today,” said CCRI head coach Dennis Grassini. “Being together on the field together for the very first time this season we felt we didn’t do that badly. Of course, we have a lot of things to work on. Essex came out strong in the second half and really gave us a few scary moments, but our goalkeeper, Jennifer Kilburn, came up big for us. She really deserved the shutout. She played great today.”

The next game for the Lady Knights will be their home opener on Saturday at 12 p.m. when they will face the Barons of Burlington County College from Pemberton, N.J. The game will be played at the CCRI soccer complex located on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.

Lady Knights’ volleyball learns from 0-3 weekend

The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball traveled to Garden City, N.Y. to begin their season at the Nassau County College Invitational. Unfortunately, the Lady Knights did not fare well, losing their three matches. First they fell to Niagara County Community College 6-25 and 22-25, then to host Nassau 18-25 and 19-25 and finally to Onondaga Community College 16-25 and 21-25. With the three losses the Lady Knights begin the season 0-3.

Match One

“I could see how nervous the girls were entering the gym,” said head coach Sam Amaral. “We have three returners and had to count on our freshman to really pull through.”

Still CCRI did do some things well.

“On a positive note our ladies never gave up,” Amaral said. “They learned and got better through each match we played.  And only one team in that gym that really beat us. We beat ourselves the rest of the games with errors behind the service line and serve receive.”

Some statistical highlights for the first match included sophomore Sarah Keomorokot’s (Pawtucket) three aces and four digs and freshman Kayleigh Clauson’s (Wakefield) four aces and seven digs.

Match Two

In the second match the Lady Knights began to compete better. Once again, though, with their own errors they lost the lead and allowed Nassau to take the lead and win the game.

Statistically, captain Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, Fla.) had four kills and two blocks and captain Lindsey Proulx (Warwick) had two aces and six digs. Also helping the Lady Knights was sophomore Samantha Archambault (North Smithfield) with one ace and 6 digs, Clauson with 10 digs and Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick) with one block and two kills.

Match Three

The CCRI coaching staff saw its efforts begin to sink in during the third match.

“The girls worked very hard in this game,” Amaral said. “I was very proud of the Lady Knights this game as far as our defense was concerned. Sarah (Keomorokot) played very well this game and when she was in the back row she would not allow a ball to drop without her body hitting the floor after it. It was really nice to see Samantha (Archambault) take everything she learned in practice and use it this game. I could see things start clicking for Sam this game. She knew it and so did I. She did great this game.”

,Statistically Keomorokot had two kills and seven digs while Proulx had one kill and five digs. Archambault had one ace, four kills and six digs. Also helping CCRI was Emily Taylor (South Kingstown) with one ace and 11 assists and Clauson with two kills and five digs. Rounding out the match for CCRI was Derefaka, who had two kills and one block and freshman April Von (Providence) came into the match and added two aces.

The Lady Knights will look to improve this weekend when they travel to Columbia, Md. to compete in the Howard Community College Dragon Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
