The Lady Knights’ CCRI softball team traveled to Dean College in Franklin, Mass. for a Region XXI doubleheader. The Lady Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Dean, 15-5, and 9-0. With the two victories, the Lady Knights improved to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in Region XXI play.

Game 1: CCRI- 15 Dean- 5 (six innings by mercy rule)

The Lady Knights scored two in the first and five in the second to jump out to a 7-0 lead. In the five-run second, Erica Jewett (Coventry, R.I.) led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, R.I.) then bunted and reached on an error, advancing Jewett to third and Rodriguez to second.

Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, R.I.) followed with a walk. Jewett and Rodriguez both scored on passed balls, co-captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, R.I.) walked and Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) hit an RBI single, scoring Rousseau. Butler and Urso advanced on passed balls. Co-captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, R.I.) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Butler. Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) reached on an error, scoring Urso. The Lady Knights scored one in the fifth and then exploded for seven in the sixth inning to give them a 10-run cushion.

In the circle for the Lady Knights, freshman Jess Spargo (Westerly, R.I.) got the start, but lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing four runs, none earned, on two hits, while walking five and striking out four Bulldog batters to pick up the victory.  Spargo was relieved by Jewett, who pitched masterfully, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run, walking two and striking out 10 Bulldog batters.

Jewett struck out the first four batters she faced, walked two then struck out the next five batters.

Game 2: CCRI- 9 Dean- 0 (five innings by mercy rule)

Once again, the Lady Knights had a 7-0 lead by the end of the second inning, this time scoring four runs in the first and three in the second inning. CCRI tacked on two more in the fourth before finishing off the Bulldogs in the fifth inning by the mercy rule.

In the first, Rousseau led off the game with a double, followed by a Butler single. Both later scored on passed balls.

Urso walked then DeLuise singled and stole second. Urso scored on another passed ball. Jewett had an RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring DeLuise.

In the second inning, Rodriguez led-off with a double, followed by an RBI double from Rousseau, who later scored on an error. Urso also doubled, Spargo reached after a third strike passed ball and that was followed by another RBI double from DeLuise, scoring Urso.

Jewett singled, but Spargo was thrown out at third and Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, R.I.) popped out to end the inning. The Lady Knights capped the scoring in the fourth with two outs, as DeLuise walked and Jewett hit a single, followed by RBI singles from Brosnahan and Rebecca Edwards (Attleboro, Mass.).

In the circle for the Lady Knights, Butler pitched very well, throwing five strong innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out seven batters en route to the shutout victory.

Butler struck out a batter in every inning, with the exception of the fourth, but she made-up for that by striking out the side in the fifth inning to end the game.

Knights roll past Ravens

The CCRI Knights’ baseball team had a day to remember on Thursday, when it traveled to Rindge, N.H. to play the Franklin Pierce JV team. Two former Knights were in the stands to watch the game, who are members of Franklin Pierce’s Varsity team. Connor Gleason (North Stonington, Conn.) and John Razzino (Cranston, R.I.) both played baseball at CCRI and have continued their careers at Franklin Pierce. The current Knights team put on a show for them to watch, scorching the ball on the way to a 24-6 victory. The win put the Knights back at .500 on the year at 8-8.

When a team scores four runs in the first inning, it usually is their best inning, but for the Knights, it was just a warm up. After four in the first, the Knights added one in the second, five more in the third and then an incredible 11 runs in the fifth. They topped it off with three more in the sixth to put the mercy rule into effect, ending the game after only seven innings.

The 24 runs that were put up by CCRI marked the first time that it scored 20 or more since 2007.

The slugfest was a great team effort, as 10 different Knights’ batters had at least one hit. CCRI was able to slug out 28 hits, 12 of which went for extra bases. The hit parade was led by co-captain Eddie Apice (North Kingstown, R.I.), who went 6-for-6 on the day, scoring twice and driving in five runs. Fellow co-captain TJ Boyajian (Warwick, R.I.) also enjoyed a very nice day, with four hits and four runs scored, while also driving in a run. Freshman second baseman Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, R.I.) took advantage of every opportunity he got with runners on base, ending up with seven RBI’s on the day to go along with four hits and five runs scored.

The parade did not stop there though. James Riley-Garnett (Newport, R.I.) was finally rewarded for his hard hitting by knocking in five RBI’s on the day along with two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base. Brandon Escalante (Providence, R.I.) and Ramiel Rodriguez (Providence, R.I.) both added two hits, two RBI’s and two runs scored apiece, while Rodriguez also added a stolen base to his day. Also getting a piece of the action were Edison Mercado (Providence, R.I.), who had three hits and three runs scored, Dan Autiello (Orlando, Fla.), who had two hits and a run scored, Ernesto Figueroa (Providence, R.I.), who added two hits, two runs and an RBI and Stephen Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.), who chipped in with a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Steve Noti (Warwick, R.I.) was the winning pitcher in the lopsided game. Noti went a flawless 2.1 innings, not allowing a base runner and striking out three.

Current Ravens’ varsity members Razzino and Gleason, who both played on the 2012 CCRI Baseball team that went to the World Series, are both key contributors to the Franklin Pierce varsity team. Razzino, a Cranston native, plays outfield for the Ravens and leads the team with 37 stolen bases. He is also batting .301 on the year with three home runs and 26 RBI’s. Gleason has been the starting pitcher in three games for the Ravens and has appeared in six. Gleason has pitched 18.1 innings on the year, while striking out 23.
