The Warwick Co-op Lady Titans fell to the Narragansett Co-op Storm, 3-1, during the Andy Gauthier Hockey Festival on Saturday night at Thayer Arena. Captain Natasha Savage had the lone goal for Warwick.

On this night, the quickness of Narragansett was too much for Warwick.

“They have a lot of speed, but it’s nothing that we can’t keep up with,” Warwick goalie Mary Greenwell said.

Warwick had a few scoring opportunities midway through the first period. First, forward Madison Balutowski’s backhand went wide and then, Savage and Makenzie Driscoll had chances, but they couldn’t light the lamp and Narragansett’s Katherine George cleared it out of the zone.

After a shot went wide from Warwick captain Kelsey Holmes, Narragansett forward Grace Gibbons scored on a pass from Livia Hagopian with 8:28 left in the first period to go up 1-0.

Warwick had another scoring chance with 4:03 left when Balutowski passed to Victoria LaFazia, only to have her shot stopped by Narragansett goalie Peyton Newman. Soon after, the Titans’ Alyssa Mathews had a slap shot cut off by a Narragansett defender.

With 2:09 to play in the opening period, Jillian Gonsalves assisted to Hagopian, who scored for Narragansett to go up 2-0.

Warwick attacked early in the second period, but it couldn’t find the back of the net. First, a Narragansett defender got in the way of a shot from Samia Pratt and then Savage passed to Mariana Brawn, but Newman made a save with her stick.

Later in the period, Warwick was on the doorstep, but shots from Holmes and forward Nicole Procaccini were denied by Newman.

Narragansett threatened to extend the lead when Madeline Gallagher went on a breakaway, but Savage got there just in time to knock the puck away. Then, Narragansett took another shot and this one was turned away by Greenwell.

Later in the second period, Warwick’s Holmes was in the Narragansett zone before getting pick-pocketed by defenseman Tea Williams.

With 1:35 to play in the second period, Balutowski passed up to Savage, who shot a wrister and lit the lamp for Warwick, pulling it within 2-1.

Warwick had a couple more opportunities at the end of the period, but shots from Holmes and Savage were blocked or wide of the net.

Freshman Rebecca Yaseen came in to relieve Greenwell in net to start the third period.

Narragansett forward Gallagher had a shot go wide before Balutowski took the puck down the other end for Warwick and shot a rocket high over the Narragansett net. Next, Savage passed to Jennah Sequeira, but her shot was stopped by Newman.

With 11:47 left to play, Gansett lit the lamp again, when Chenchen Marino scored on assists from George and Alli Moffet.

In the waning minutes, Warwick’s Driscoll fired a slap shot from the corner, but it was denied by Newman. Holmes had a chance in front, but that too was stopped by Newman.

With the loss, Warwick falls to 7-7-1 overall.

Following the game, all teams involved in the hockey festival gathered in the neutral zone for an emotional ceremony involving Gauthier’s family.

The Lady Titans were scheduled to return to league action on Monday against Barrington Co-op, but results were unavailable at press time.

They’ll take on Barrington Co-op again on Friday at the West Warwick Civic Center at 7:30 p.m.
