Lady Titans open season with a bang

Fresh off its best season, the Warwick girls’ hockey team is already upping the ante in 2013. The Lady Titans started the new season with a bang this weekend, cruising past Lincoln/Cumberland 10-0 in Friday’s season opener then making history with the program’s first-ever victory over La Salle, a resounding 6-0 win on Saturday night.

Warwick had no trouble with the Lincoln/Cumberland co-op team in the opener, getting a shutout from Erin Vermilye and out-shooting the Lions 38-8. Caroline Henn had two goals, Alyssa Mathews delivered a goal and two assists, Madison Balutowski had a goal and an assist and Natasha Savage dished out three assists. The Titans got one goal each from Jaime Given, Kelsey Holmes, Savannah Hersey, Abigail Given, Marianna Brawn and Victoria LaFazia. Vermilye made eight saves, including a stop on a breakaway to preserve the shutout.

But the blowout win proved to be just an appetizer thanks to Saturday’s results.

La Salle has won the last two state championships and was the only team in the state that Warwick had not beaten in its seven-year history. The monkey came off the back in a big way thanks to a big push by the team’s veterans and a dominant performance in net by freshman Gabriella Dicomitis. Balutowski, one of the team’s leading scorers last year, tallied a hat trick and added two assists. Abby Ellis chipped in two goals and an assist, while Holmes had a goal and one assist. Jaime Given, Savage and Hersey had the other assists.

Making her high school hockey debut, Dicomitis made 27 saves in shutting out the Rams. It’s the first time La Salle has been shut-out since the 2010-11 season.

Warwick will have another chance to make a statement with a doubleheader this weekend. On Friday, the Titans host Burrillville/Ponaganset at Thayer Arena at 6:30 p.m.. The Broncos won their opener 9-2 over Lincoln/Cumberland. On Saturday, Warwick plays Bay View at 4:30 p.m., at Levy Rink in Burrillville. The Bengals beat Mount St. Charles 7-3 in their season opener.

The Lady Titans look VG. Its a very young season but it looks to me they have a good shot at State Champions this year.
