Lady Titans storm into D-II semifinals

Posted

After receiving a bye into the Division II quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Toll Gate girls’ soccer team punched its ticket to the semifinals on Saturday morning.

The Titans defeated fourth-seeded Burrillville 1-0 behind a first-half goal from leading-scorer Hannah McNulty. Kendra Silvia assisted. In goal, Amber Francois saved eight shots.

Only Coventry now stands in the way of a championship game berth for Toll Gate. The Titans and Oakers are scheduled to square off Wednesday at 8 p.m. at East Greenwich High School.

Toll Gate will be the second semifinal game of the day, as there will also be a 6 p.m. game. Scituate will take on the winner of Monday’s Pilgrim-Westerly quarterfinal contest.

The D-II title will be decided at Rhode Island College on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Pats-Titans ready to square off

The Toll Gate girls’ volleyball team pulled off a dominant, stunning upset in the Division II preliminary round of the playoffs on Friday night, defeating No. 3 seeded Mt. Hope 3-0.

Toll Gate won its three games 25-16, 25-23 and 26-24. With the win, the sixth-seeded Titans advanced to the D-II quarters, where they’ll face a familiar opponent – Pilgrim. The Pats are the No. 2 seed and had a bye through the preliminary round.

That game is scheduled for today at 6:30 p.m. at Pilgrim. The winner will advance to the semifinals opposite either Tolman or Cranston East.

The semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at URI’s Keaney Gymnasium.

Local teams in action on Monday

The Pilgrim girls’ soccer team highlights a big day of postseason action featuring teams from Warwick on Monday.

The Pats were scheduled to take on Westerly in the Division II quarterfinals, while the Toll Gate boys’ soccer team played Classical, also in the D-II quarterfinals. The Warwick Vets boys’ soccer team was in action against Woonsocket in the D-III quarterfinals, while the Bishop Hendricken soccer team was hosting South Kingstown in the D-I quarters.

See the Thursday edition of The Beacon for coverage of those games.
