Nick Albanese’s one-man play will be repeated again this November 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. at Artists’ Exchange Theatre 82, 82 Rolfe Square in Cranston.
We caught the 45-minute, one-act play last weekend, where the audience, filled with a number of folks of Sicilian heritage and a few of us non-Sicilians enjoyed Albanese’s trip down memory lane.
With Stage Manager Mike Cronin providing vintage photos in the background, Nick first gave us a bit of history on the origin of Sicily and the migration of many of its inhabitants to America, many settling in Providence.
Nick gives us a look at his family tree, showing us the bakery his father owned in Providence and telling stories about the neighborhood.
You don’t have to be Sicilian to relate to growing up in a close-knit family at a time when things like the family dinner and playing outside until it got dark were changing.
Albanese has a warm, friendly, humble approach to sharing his stories with his audience. Perhaps one or two more humorous stories would add to his play, which he is planning to bring to Westerly, where he says many people of Sicilian origin have settled.
You can catch “Memoirs of the Last Sicilian,” presented by the SantRiana Theatre Company this weekend at Theatre 82. Tickets are $10.
