It took double overtime, but it was well worth it for the Pilgrim field hockey team.

The Pats upended Chariho, which went 12-3-0 in Division II play, 1-0 in the second period of extra play to earn a spot in the semifinals. Senior captain Paula Cavanagh notched the game-winner. Goalkeeper Lindsey Fontes recorded 12 saves in her shutout effort.

Pilgrim will face off with Tiverton for the right to play in the state title game. The Tigers pulled off a stunner of their own against South Kingstown, 2-1, in double overtime as well.

The Pats and Tigers faced off Wednesday at East Greenwich High School at 5:30 p.m., but results were unavailable at press time. The two sides played to a scoreless tie on Oct. 4.

Toll Gate advances to girls’ tennis semis

The Titans edged North Smithfield, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon behind a doubles sweep after dropping three of four singles matches.

Maddy Capaldi was the only individual victory for Toll Gate, beating Julia Kasanovich in comeback fashion. She lost the first set, 4-6, before wins of 6-3 and 6-2.

In doubles action, Kate Snyman and Jenn Li took down Alyana Kozlik and Piper LaBarre, 6-3, 6-2. Martha Davis and Elizabeth Brousseau vanquished Brianna Venditti and Stephanie Venditti, 6-3, 6-4. Sabrina Dengel and Larissa Anika clinched the win for Toll Gate with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Lauren Bourque and Abby Votta.

The task got considerably tougher for Toll Gate, as it faced off with undefeated Prout in the semifinals on Wednesday at Barrington High School. Results were unavailable at press time.

Pilgrim dispatches Portsmouth in four sets

Pilgrim’s girls’ volleyball took down Portsmouth, 3-1, on Monday evening behind five aces from Jordan Tiberi.

Isabel Allaire chipped in five kills to help the Pats avoid a Portsmouth comeback. Pilgrim took the first two sets before dropping the third, 25-18. It took care of business in the fourth set, 25-17, to improve to 6-6 in league play.

The Pats hosted Westerly for senior night on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

Pats tie Mariners to close regular season

The Pilgrim boys’ soccer team finished its Division III regular-season slate with a 1-1 tie against Narragansett on Tuesday.

Pilgrim led most of the second half because of a goal from Matt Woods, but the defense wilted just enough to allow Narragansett to equalize. Owen McCadden knotted the score with just four minutes to go, securing a point for the Mariners.

If the Mariners had won, they would have leapfrogged the Pats in the standings for the No. 4 playoff spot.
