Man indicted in December murder at Cranston apartment complex

Posted

The man authorities had identified as the sole suspect in a late December murder at the Terrace Apartments in Cranston has been indicted by the Statewide Grand Jury.

Louis Sinapi, 53, of 40 Howard Ave. in Cranston, is charged with murder, larceny over $1,500, and two counts of possessing a controlled substance (morphine and oxymorphone), according to the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin. He is currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institution for violating his probation on an unrelated charge, and is due to be arraigned in Providence Superior Court on July 8.

Chief of Police Col. Michael Winquist earlier this year called Sinapi the “prime suspect” in the killing of 55-year-old John Fiore of 133 Farmington Ave., Apt. 4. Police have said Sinapi was a former roommate of Fiore, who worked for the state Department of Environmental Management at Lincoln Woods State Park. Sinapi had been released from prison shortly before Fiore’s killing.

Fiore was found dead in his apartment on Dec. 30 with what the chief at the time described as “visible injuries,” including stab wounds. His body was discovered when a relative went to the apartment to check on his well being after several days without contact.

Sinapi was quickly identified as an acquaintance of Fiore, and detectives sought to speak with him early in the investigation.

Sinapi reportedly misrepresented his identity to detectives during their initial contact on Dec. 30, and later that day fled when police went to find him at a home in Johnston. A short time later, he was apprehended near the Citizens Bank on Killingly Street in Providence.

Sinapi also is said to have had a deep wound to his right hand at the time he was taken into custody.

Fiore’s vehicle, a silver 2009 Chevrolet Impala, was missing from the apartment complex at the time his body was discovered. The vehicle was subsequently located by Johnston police.

The indictment alleges Sinapi murdered Fiore between Dec. 26 and Dec. 30 and stole the vehicle, and that Sinapi was also in possession of morphine and oxymorphone around the time he was taken into custody.

Cranston police investigated the murder and larceny charges, while Johnston police investigated the drug charges.
